I was walking is San Francisco, i have never tasted a Fondue before so i decided to try it, the place is very nice, clean and quiet, not very crowded.
The employees are very nice, and most important the Fondue is super delicious, this is my first time and i love it.

With some mediocre Fondue places in the Bay Area we were drawn to this unique and charming chalet on Van Ness Avenue. Tasty cheeses and a great wine list, the perfect night out... Yodel, yodel, yodel

After having spent a day hiking around Muir Woods and Mt. Tamalpais, my wife suggested we find a Fondue restaurant when we returned to the city. We had been disappointed with the previous two nights in SF so we were hoping for a surprise. And a positively pleasant surprise it was.

The Matterhorn is a small place that is decorated like a traditional alpine stubbe that you would find in the south of Germany, the eastern part of Switzerland or in Austria. We were greeted immediately and seated. The menu is not overly extensive. Basically you can choose between meat fondue (with hot oil or broth) or cheese fondue (or raclette).

We ordered a little of both: Beef Bourguignon and traditional cheese fondue (Emmenthaler & Gruyere). Each came with a salad - a light mixed salad vinaigrette. The table was set rapidly for our fondue and almost on cue, the hot pots came. There were so many condiments ranging from olives to pickled onions, cornichons to a spicy aioli. There was a side of smoked sausage, a plate of green apples, swiss fried potatoes and much more. The food was excellent, especially the cheese. It was more than 3 of us could eat. I ordered a superb glass of red Zinfandel while my wife opted for an imported beer.

We were offered a dessert menu. As if we hadn't already stuffed ourselves, the sight of apple strudel on the menu was too much to resist. To finish off, I had an espresso - the way it's supposed to taste. It was accompanied by a tile of Swiss Cailler chocolate - simply the best. Had I not been driving, I would have sampled some of their brandy including a selection of fruit brandy's (Obstler, Williams, Cherry Herring, etc).

Throughout the meal we listened to softly played alpine polka music which transported us back to our years of skiing in the Swiss and Austrian Alps.

Our evening was wonderful and the service was both prompt and courteous, including visits from the owner/manager. The cost was $164 including tip for 3 of us.

We will be back to Matterhorn the next time we're in the City by the Bay. This is truly an authentic Swiss experience and one which you will remember for a long time.

Valet parking is available for $10 in front of the restaurant, but a public parking garage seems to be available on Van Ness at Broadway

If you enjoy being the only party in a restaurant, this place is perfect. The interior looks like something out of a B movie set - the restaurant has all kinds of Swiss decorations; a giant Alphorn on the wall, masks of demons to scare away the snow, wooden tables and hard wooden chairs... The one thing it does not have is customers. Another thing missing is a chef.
The restaurant website warns that "All dishes may not be available at all times" - this is because they do not have a regular chef. The only dish always available is fondue. To make fondue, there is no need for a chef; cut up bread, throw oil or cheese into a pot, and serve. The fondue is tasty, but eating here is creepy due to the emptiness of the restaurant.
The service is adequate... it is difficult to imagine bad service when you are the only table in the restaurant.

This was our 4th visit in ten years. The other three visits were four star experiences. I would give this a minus star if it was possible . We were seated in an alcove with three other tables, one of which was covered with dirty dishes, used silverware, and a napkin on the floor, under the table......during our entire meal. Mid way thru our meal, the diners on our other side finished and left..........their used dishes, silverware, and napkins stared at us for the rest of our meal. The waiter seemed to have an attitude.....not friendly at all. She forget 1/2 our main order, then asked if we still wanted it??? We ordered the fondue......certain items need to be brought to the table at, or close to the same time. We had an inordinately long wait between some items tht should have arrived simultaneously. Several times the servers looked our way from across the room.....as if checking on us.....but never explained the delays or made any effort to get our order to us.My daughter asked for a refill for two of the teeny weeny condiment containers. The waiter never mentioned it would b $5.00 per dish to refill. Waitress brought the bill, put it on the table and walked away without a word. We were never rude, never made unreasonable requests, and never complained about the horrible service or the uneven quality of the food. Our bill was $140. for the two of us. We won't be back......
