everything was superb. the service was exceptional but unobtrusive. the food presentation and the food was fantastic. and it was a fairly quiet restaurant as well so you could hear one another talk. i did the 5 course tasting and my wife did the 3 course tasting. every plate was excellent and one of the nice things was that when you have the 3 course tasting menu, you choose just that: three courses from among five. there is no requirement that it must be appetizer, meat or fish, and dessert or some similar combination. this gives you the flexibility to eat on the light or heavy side. i had corn soup with truffles and lobster, duck with cherry and jus, char, a seafood combination (abalone, tuna carpaccio, and oyster), and dessert. my wife had tomato and beet salad, squab, and lobster risotto. both of us left thinking this was the best restaurant we had been to and we have been to a good number of top SF restaurants. we will certainly make this our "special occasion" restaurant to go to in the future.

2nd best meal that I've ever had in SF. I did the 7 course tasting. You've to get the foie gras. Stay away from the escargot w/ bone marrow, it was way to salty.

Meeting my parents in San Francisco I had the three of us a reservation. We still had to wait 30 mins for a seat but they were very apologetic and sat us as soon as the table cleared bringing three excellent amuse bouche's each (one after another).
Attention to service here is excellent, presentation beautiful but not ostentatious and the food is some of the best in the USA.

Once again I opted for the "Warm Pig's Foot, Sweetbread and Lobster Terrine" and followed with a succulent piece of Artic Char.

The venison was perfect, dark, velvety and perfectly cooked.
Desserts here are excellent but I opted for the equally excelllent cheese.

Highly recommended. Not cheap but would be twice the price in NYC or LA. Wine list is fair and not overpriced with lots of bottles in the $50-$99 range.

Took my in-laws here for Christmas Eve dinner. Nothing was less that perfect. The warm greeting, attentive and friendly service, fantastic food, excellent wine. How refreshing to find a place like this in a city where "loud and crowded" are nearly always interpreted as 'ambience'. This little gem of a place offers a beautiful dining experience unlike any other. The portions are perfect for anyone who appreciates the flavor that can only come from the time and attention taken to create memorable meals. Each bite is exquisite. Thank you La Folie management and staff - you all are amazing!
