“It is a dining experience and worth 4 stars because the food was not what I expected.”
Reviewed November 11, 2013

I gave this restaurant a four which is a very good score. So let me start by saying it is Very Good but not great. But this is an opinion. I will share the opinions of six diners.

Service is excellent. They are extremely attentive and professional.
Ambiane is excellent. The room is beautifully decorated and well lit.
Kitchen. You can get a glimpse of the kitchen and see the artists at work. A very small kitchen with about 8 chefs in the kitchen creating beautifully presented works of art.
Presentation is excellent. The food is prepared in an artistic format.

Now for the disappointments:

Food: Three out of six thought the appetizer they ordered was very good and the other three said it was okay. For the main most enjoyed the main but everyone raved over their dessert and some were unwilling to share a taste :) The wine selection is great but I ordered a mixed drink to start and the glass had a strange smell (could be the SF water, soap, or drying method). It ruined the drink experience but I did not send it back.

So in a nutshell this is a very good restaurant but I really can't say the flavor of the food "knocked my socks off" but I did enjoy the overall experience. It's not fair to compare to French food I've had in France or even the US because it restaurant is unique, but for my taste it was good but not great. Also one in our group had the Kobe beef and was disappointed. The flavor was great but for and extra $75 (plus $90) it was a small portion for a man.

“Excellent (but 100 USD/guest)”
Reviewed November 6, 2013

Quiet and nicely decorated place, the best service we have enjoyed in SF, very delicate food of great quality, and a great wine list. From the amuse-bouche to the dessert, all very good. But the bill without wine is about 100 USD per guest (very reasonable prices / wine list).
This is different from the price range shown on tripadvisor. You will not regret the check, but you'd better know before.

“This restaurant should have a michelin star”
Reviewed October 31, 2013

The food here is outstanding - the taste, creativity, presentation and service is excellent. The menu is designed so you spend a lot or keep the price reasonable which is such a great option for fine dining. The owner and chef talks to the guests and is a delight.
They really do deserve a michelin star or two.

“Lovely!”
Reviewed October 29, 2013

It was a celebration of friends, food, wine and laughter. We all went for it -- the 5 course meal, with extra desserts for some and one was crazy enough to order a second entre'!! Every single dish was so special and tasty ... could have been more truffles and less cheese in the risotto -- but the flavors were still delightful. Nice wine menu - and not the usual 300% mark up!! what a wonderful thing!! Chef came round to check on us (and I"m sure to see who would be ordering soooo much food!). He sent out several tastes - and all were delicious. Our server was fun, knowledgeable and interesting. She just went with us and although - it had the potential to go too pretentious - she just went with the tone of the table. This takes a smart, in tune person who genuinely cares and enjoys her job. Can't say enough nice things about the room, people and food. If you are looking for a place to enjoy good food and company - please make an effort to spend an evening with chef and his people.

“ANYTHING BETTER?”
Reviewed October 26, 2013

This San Francisco restaurant has got to be the finest eatery in a City of Great Culinary establishments . Osetra caviar' ($120.00), slightly salty, mild served on a mini pancake with creme' fresh...Absolutely outstanding! The tasting menu, ($110.00) featured duck and oxtail cosomme' with Enoki mushrooms, tender, tasty, delightful. The appetizer was frogs legs, served crispy with wild mushrooms. Filet Mignon, tender, medium rare, perfectly put together. Baked Alaska ended the repast. Browned crust with the ice cream explosion just as we expected. We shared 2 bottles of Bourdeaux, a Chinon that was good and a Cote Provence that was unbelievably friendly. With tip, $600.00 covered our obligation for 2. Beautiful setting, fantastic service, (Iva was the best), and a chance to dine world-class. A great meal in a great City for an expensive, but worthy price.
