Recommended by a S.F. resident. I love oysters and she said this is the best in town. She was right! It's a small un-assuming family owned diner which has been in the Nob Hill area for a number of years. Around lunch time the line starts to build
Îso be prepared to wait.
The food preparers are good at what they do and are quite knowledgeable and will get you in and out in good time. Be prepared to spend a little more but the freshness of the product makes up for that. By the eay, if you are an oyster lover, try the oyster sampler, the mixed seafood salad or the clam chowder.

One of our absolute favorite restaurants in the city. Essentially 100% seafood oriented, one small bar of about 15 seats, and a long line. The freshest tastiest seafood you'll find, cash only, and not cheap. But you get what you pay for. Family owned for a long, long time. Heaps of oysters along with crab, clams, chowder, smoked salmon, smoked trout, and most any other seafood delight you can dream up. They catered my bar mitzvah serving oysters on the half shell in our back yard. We go early and usually end up ordering the Louis combo salad, chowder, and maybe some bonus crab cocktail

This place is highly touted by all the SF chefs as the go to place for fresh seafood (they are a market too). They only have about 20 seats at a marble bar---we had to wait about an hour, which is typical. It was interesting--family owned since 1977, and started by Danish Brothers in the early 1900's all in the same location. Ru by characters. Clearly we were going to get what they wanted us to get, we notice everyone deferred to their servers. The oysters on the half shell were wonderful, but at 28.00 a dozen they should have been. The clam chowder was tasty, but certainly not worth the wait. The place is a "joint"--full of character. Not terribly clean or comfortable. Pricing is ridiculously high. Glad I was able to try it , but will not return.

If you want a taste of old San Francisco and you like raw seafood (e.g., oysters, clams, shrimp, crab), a visit to Swan's is a must. The fish is FRESH, the Sourdough Bread is the best, and the service is outstanding. There is usually a line, but in the late afternoon the line is not so long. Seating is close and only at a long bar, but it is a great way to meet other travelers or locals. Both the beer and wine offerings are excellent to compliment the meal. One disappointment was the clam chowder (the only hot item on the menu). It had a thin base and seemed to separate. Taste was okay but did not have a good appearance. I would not order that again. Also, they only accept cash.

We made the decision to commit to the wait !
There was always a queue, so if you cannot wait do not bother....

The establishment is famly owned for over 100 years and it shows.
It is cold, the wait in San Fran is not warm so be ready...

The food is freash, excelent and the crew try to look after you as much as possible.

We ate the prawn cocktail, fresh oysers, seafood combination salad and lobster.

Food was outstandind and fresh but simple in flavour and unsophisticated. But the service and ambience is fun and unique !

If you can commit and have the time enjoy !!!

Cheers
