Very friendly and attentive staff, nice atmosphere, good drinks, but a hit/miss with the food. The bar serves outstanding cocktails - with a nightly mixture of their own design which is always fun to try. The starters were very good - tuna tartar and sea scallops - but the main course (halibut) was a bit disappointing; perhaps the starters got our hopes too high. The fish was cooked well, but it was not seasoned at all and the tomato sauce it sat upon was very spicy - overwhelming the fish. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends visiting the city, but advise them to not try the halibut.

For most tourists Chapeau is a bit out of the way but it is worth taking a cab over. The restaurants is filled with locals who make it a romantic night out. You'll see some reviewers complain about the the tables being to close together or the service being to pushy. But compared to the places we know in France this is a spacious and welcoming eating spot. The meals are French-ish. They took hits from the French kitchen and did a US make over. But not bad at all. The cook knows what he is doing. It's tastefull and well executed. And the choice of wine is actually very good. Chapeau has some of the best wines we tasted around the westcoast. Since wine is surprisingly expensive in the USA when you eat out (14 dollars for one glass is bizarre and outrageous for us Europeans but not rare!!) this place has a very good selection. Overall not a complete hats off but a 'tres agreable' restaurant.

Solid spot. Interesting crowd and mix for a French bistro, but the staff, the guests, everyone was a joy. It is quite unassuming, behind an unassuming facade. It's white cloth and near fine dining with fantastic service. It's crowded, and our table was located in a less than perfect spot, but they really do a fantastic job servicing you, and it was never a problem for our group of 4. For a french restaurant on Clement, they went the extra mile... a tasting menu that included sweetbreads as an app, filet with bone marrow, or duck breast, among other choices for the entree, and a wonderful array of desserts... creme brulee, a french toast, as well as a wonderful cheese plate for more than enough for two. I grabbed a Sauternes as well, at the close of the meal.... so you won't be disappointed for a aperitif to digestif french style coursed dinner. The wine list is accessible, without too much depth, so you won't be too stymied. It's should be easy to figure out, but I am sure they will offer assistance.

Well done!

Waited 20 mins for water and menus, then the service got worse. Food overcooked, Noisy interior, owner swanning about acting very French while the clients have a rotten experience. Would NOT recommend this, its a waste of time and money, as there are too many other good choices in the city.
