Drove down from Marin to meet some friends and enjoyed sharing some very good tapas and conversation. Service was nice, but there was no valet that night (weeknight) and finding a parking place was nearly impossible. Had to drive around for nearly 30 minutes.

A good variety of dishes, nicely prepared and presented. Not everything was excellent, but we were more interested in the sharing/talking so it worked out well.

Located in a trendy area of the Mission District, Andalu is a contradiction of both warmth and industrial chic. This "small plate" venue was packed on the Saturday night we visited (without a reservation) and the noise level was high. After waiting about 30 minutes we were seated upstairs which cut down on the volume considerably. If the restaurant is crowded I'd suggest asking to sit there.
Fruity Sangria, either red or white, is a house specialty. We ordered a carafe and thoroughly enjoyed. It was nice to see they do offer a wide selection of wines by the glass and draft beer. Our waitress recommended ordering 2-3 plates per person as they were "small". I think 2 each would have been enough especially if one of them is from the meat side of the menu as they were larger portions. All were delicious! Getting high marks from us were the flavorful Ahi Tartare Tacos w/Mango Salsa, zesty Duck Confit w/Sweet Soy Sauce and perfectly cooked Miso Glazed Sea Bass w/Sweet Soy Sauce. Off the meat menu we enjoyed the Grilled Swordfish and tender Chicken Picatta.
Considering the number of diners that evening, our wait staff was unbelievably pleasant and efficient. All in all, in spite of the noise level, I'd highly recommend a visit.

Andalu is basically a tapas restaurant and excellent cocktail bar. The ambiance is very nice. Restaurant is deep with a bar along one side and tables along the other. There is also an upstairs mezzanine/balcony. Service is very good, but a bit slow if the restaurant is very busy (perhaps under-staffing). Food is excellent and very reasonably priced. My daughter and I had 7 tapa plates, two desserts, three cocktails, a wine flight, and two after-dinner drinks for less than $170 before gratuity. That’s definitely not bad for San Francisco. Favorite items were the duck dumplings with sweet chili dipping sauce, the ahi tartare tacos with lime and mango salsa, the chicken mole, and the fresh corn with pimento and lime Queso Fresca. The cocktail menu is extensive. This is a great place if you are not in a big hurry, and why would you want to be? It’s a nice place to linger.

I rated this restaurant poor because compared to other San Francisco tapas restaurants, it is overpriced and the service is poor. We ordered 2 stoli cosmos, which were not good at all. One was too strong and the other was like water. The garlic olives seemed blan (how do you do that with garlic olives with lemon rinds?). The ahi tacos tartare were good, but they were tiny (even for tapas), and it was 10.50 for 4. The beet salad was nice as was the sea bass, but again, over priced at $9.75 for 5 cubes on bits of lettuce. The mash potatoes were fine, as mashed potatoes go, only it would have been good if they had arrived with the tacos and sea bass and not with the salad as a first course. When I mentioned it to the server, that it was a bit early, his only explanation was that this was tapas, it comes out when it comes out. I didn't bother telling him that as the waiter, he has some control over when he places which order. It wouldn't have taken genius to time the mashed potatoes to arrive with the sea bass and tacos.

The service was next to nil, which I would understand if the restaurant were full, but it was half empty at 7:30 p.m. The wait staff and the bar tenders seemed more interested in chatting it up with people at the bar than with the customers.

They do have valet parking, which is good for the mission, although we did not use it. Street parking indicated only 2 hour parking up until 9 p.m. We arrived at 6:30, and figured if there was still a meter person ticketing cars at 8:45 p.m., in the mission, then we'd pay it!

Had a wonderful dinner. The food was great, the menu original, the staff friendly and helpful and the prices phantastic. Had spare ribs braised in Coca Cola... delicious! Would anytime go back. You will find always something, if you are very hungry or just a little...
