We came here with a friend of Indian descent who proclaimed this the best Indian restaurant in San Francisco , Apparently it has been recently renovated and no longer the hole in the wall she remembered . She proclaimed the food to be as good as ever . I had the flavorful sang paneer . My husband had a good lamb dish . Our fiend had a delicious eggplant bhartha . Service is more or less do-it-yourself. Not much ambience but clean and cheerful.

“Tasteful Indian Food at Cheap Price”
Reviewed October 28, 2011

Visited this Indian restaurant after eating at few other Indian restaurants during the visit.

Few things to note first:
-- The place is a hole in the wall. You have to self-serve including getting your own plastic glass for water, dish, utencils, fill water, etc. If you want proper service, this is NOT the place for you.
-- The place had loud Indian music and television going. If you want to sit down and have a quite dinner, this is not the place.
-- The place does not look fully clean – so if you are one of those individuals that look for cleanliness, this is NOT the place.
-- Sauces are pre-made so if you want to customize the sauce to your taste, don’t bother – find some other restaurant.

It seems that the owner (Zulfiqar Gudda Haider) and one other individual worked at that restaurant during my visit. Zulfiqar acts as the cook as well as to take your order. You will have to look at the menu and write down what you want on their order form and hand it to Zulfiqar and he is too busy.

I ordered chicken kabab and garlic nan. It was while to get the food; however, when I tasted the food, it removed all regrets to eat their food. It was very tasteful food. Their prices are very low -- compare to other indian restaurants.

Had the place been little bit more orgainzed and the service was better, I would definitively would have given much higher ranking.

My suggestion – do takeout instead of eating there.

“Don't be Fooled by Appearances - Pretty Much Delish”
Reviewed September 12, 2011

The fact that Pakwan is a standard for us is a tad ironic, seeing I don't know that I would have even tried them if it weren't for a personal recommendation.

Slightly off the beaten path, when you peer inside the store-front eatery from the street, you will notice it is missing all the accoutrement you expect with your curry such as rich colored surroundings, including paintings and/or tapestries; ethnic music. It is positively sparse. This is in stark contrast to the flavors of the food they serve up: all the lush and deep tastes of curries and other Indian/Pakistani offerings. They are very consistent and always have a special dish for the day. One of our favorites, from the daily menu, is the Tandoori Fish, a dish you rarely find served. And of course, the Garlic Naan is to die for.

The prices are also very reasonable–perhaps this is the inspirant to keeping the decoration at a minimum.

“SF Cheap Eats”

The place serves great food. It is a BYOB type of place. You pretty much have the get your own utensils and table set. The Pakistani cuisine here is the best at this price point.
