“Excellent food, but very noisy”
Reviewed September 8, 2012

The food was excellent and service was great, but we couldn't hear ourselves talk and that was in what they said was the quieter room. The tagolini with scallops and sea bass pomedoro were excellent, very tasty. However, two large groups in the room made the noise level so loud we didn't stay for dessert because we wanted to be able to talk without shouting. My ears were ringing.

“Delightful Dinner”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

This an honest-to-goodness review about Panta Rei restaurant. We arrived an hour early before our reservation and they were able to seat us. Before I get into specific dishes, I want to assure you that every dish we ordered was absolutely fabulous -- they are true to their Italian roots. For our antipasti, we selected the Arancio & finocchio (a mixed green salad w/shaved fennel, orange, olives, EVO & a thick balsamic). This dish was perfect to begin our meal. We selected 2 primis: Polenta nera (shrimp in mascarpone cream sauce over a black polenta) -- we tasted a little bit of garlic and maybe a hint of sherry in the cream sauce, which was delightful. And Tre paste: 2 Ravioli w/cream (one w/spinach & one w/chicken), Farfalle in a pink sauce (Vodka sauce), and Gnocci in a red sauce (home-made, reduced tomato s.) Both dishes were absolutely delicious and went well with a bottle of their Chianti Classico.
For our secundi, we ordered Pappardelle verdi all'anatra -- green fettucine w/tender duck meat in a delightful brandy pink sauce. Also, Osso buco gratinato -- veal shank (falling off the bone) in tomato sauce topped w/gorgonzola & served w/polenta. These two dishes are the very best -- be warned that you must pace yourself if you order this much for two people -- the portions are large and very mouth-watering -- eat slowly and enjoy.
Finally, we finished off this great meal with one order of Tiramisu. Their Tiramisu is no-doubt the very best we have ever tasted.
This restaurant is a MUST for foodies. But go hungry and eat slowly to savor each bite. The manager, Gianni, is from Sicily and knows great cuisine. And please hug the head chef, Ulisse, for he is an artist when preparing Italian food.

“A tasty slice of Italy with lots of pastas”
Reviewed July 8, 2012 via mobile

This North Beach eatery in Little Italy was a great find. The wait staff were attentive and friendly (not to mention the complimentary wine and shot of vodka was a nice touch). The menu has a good selection of pastas, that have a different slant to anywhere else I've seen. I had the mushroom ravioli with asparagus sauce, which I'm still dreaming about now. My friends had the chicken ravioli in red sauce (nicely presented), calzone (huge) and capricciosa pizza (great base and plenty of topping). Definitely go there.

“Lamb shank to die for!”
Reviewed June 22, 2012

Picked this place on Columbus Ave because it looked busy and lively but not too touristy. Most of the diners did seem to be locals. Menu changes nightly and had a good variety. Had the fried calamari/zucchini/shrimp appetizer with very tasty seafood sauce. The orange and fennel salad was good but used mandarin sections instead of trimmed oranges. The three pasta sampler my partner was very good but my lamb shank was like heaven on earth. Huge and very well seasoned, with the meat just falling off the bone. Overall a great dining experience, cost $60 for the two of us (nondrinkers). Funniest thing was watching my waiter eyeball my dinner, asking how it was, wondering if he should order that later. And a few nights afterward we walked by the door and he popped out grinning to say he loved the lamb shank and tonight they had a lamb based pasta sauce.
