I ate dinner here with my girlfriend and we really enjoyed it. They accept reservations online and I'd recommend doing so since it seems to be busy all the time. I had the filet mignon and I'd recommend it.

Johns Grill is a classic. One of the best restaurants in town. A no nonsense approach gives you excellent food no matter what you order, their specialties are particularly superb, great wine selection and the cocktails are like no other in town. Highly recommended.

I had a lunch with one of my oldest IBM friends back in 2006 in this great restaurant.
I am sure it has not changed much ever since.
Very lively place, great food, old school grandezza.
Happy to come back next time in town.
( an article in the FT today just reminded me of this great place)

Chowder (one of the things you got to get in SF) was ok - not bad but far from memorable. A bowl from Boudin's would have been better. Service was nice and friendly. Historic landmark location. Good music. Seemed more of a tourist / business place vs. where the locals go.

Have a small bar area - no TVs in bar. Cool music upstairs.

While I only had a lite meal (the menu looked good) but what came out only looked ok and overpriced for what it was. What I had was good but not a standout.

I have been back here several times; tried various steaks and starters. The menu is not huge, but a good selection. I have had the Rib-Eye and Porterhouse steaks, and they were spot on (Med-rare), and came with zucchini and broccoli that was not overcooked, and a nice baked potato. And good bread. If you order the Porterhouse steak you will most likely not need breakfast the next day. And yes the prawns in the giant prawn cocktail are big. The food is great, and comes fast.
And the place, just off the buzzing market street, takes you back to the time between the world wars. It is like being briefly in another time zone.
I have had great meals, and will go back. Yes, it is expensive (35 for a good steak incl sides), but what do you expect dining in a central location in an expensive city?
