There were eight of us in our party. We had made a reservation and ended up on the third floor in the corner. Beautiful room and much quieter then the other floors. Service was great and the food was wonderful. We started out with escargot and the prawns, both excellent. I got the grilled red snapper and several people in our party got lamb. Everything was first class, even the bread. Highly recommend it for a unique dining experience!

We Had no problem getting a table.
Nice friendly staff. Very good ceasar salad, with ALOT of chicken in it.
Not the cheapest place to eat, but not bad for San Fransisco.
Live piano music is a Nice touch, and gives a cosy athmosphere.

I had back to back meals here on the last day of my conference. I suppose that’s an indication of my level of satisfaction.

For lunch, I had the grilled pacific red snapper, with beurre blanc. Sauce was a bit too creamy, but the fish tasted delicate with a lemony zest. For dinner, I tried the New England Clam Chowder – something I often avoid on the west coast as a New Englander. It was creamy and very good, although perhaps not worth the $11 charged. My main dish was the classic Sam Spade’s Lamp Chops with baked potato and sliced tomatoes. There must have been four or six of the chops, and they were cooked to order perfectly. No wonder Humphrey Bogart chose it!

The ambiance at John’s Grill was reminiscent of a 1940s film, with lots of autographed photos on the walls, and the overall pricing was quite fair (clam chowder notwithstanding). It was a fun outing (on both occasions), and I left feeling happy with a satisfied stomach.

One step up from a diner. The food was basic - steak, jacket potato and some nice fresh veg. Nothing fancy but well cooked. I was a bit disappointed wither the ketchup on the $20 crab salad but maybe my expectations were too high.... It's busy with the claim to fame of being the bar in the Maltese Falcon. Atmospheric with some decent background music. Service was average.
