This historic restaurant is one of the city's oldest and most famous and is a favorite of celebrities who enjoy great steaks, expertly prepared fresh seafood with excellent service and a one of a kind atmosphere. John's Grill was a setting in author Dashiell Hammetts, The Maltese Falcon. The restaurant has earned many tributes: it has been chosen as one of the 10 best by Esquire and featured in Gourmet Magazine. Live jazz nightly in the upper level dining room. ZAGAT RATED: Food 26 / Decor 24 / Service 25 / Cost $44 "Step back in time" at this circa-1908 Downtown "landmark", where "solid steakhouse fare" and "strong drinks" draw "tourists and locals alike"; "one of the last old-style SF eateries", it's also renowned as a "Dashiell Hammett hangout" (and a setting in The Maltese Falcon.)"

Good but not great. steak was tasty but overpriced. Seafood was also good, salmon and the snapper, but way over priced. Union Square prices, overpriced. Salads were avg $10 a piece at other restaurants would be $5.
All in all, good but a tourist trap

An SF landmark resting on its past laurels! Overpriced and very touristy. Much better grills in the city with far better seafood!

. My wife and I happened upon John’s Grill as we were walking around San Francisco looking for a place for dinner. The décor is classic steak-house and the food is fabulous. We each ordered a salad and shared a filet minion. The steak was cooked rare to perfection and there was not a scrap one left on either of our plates. Our waiter, Marc M, was attentive yet not overbearing - a pleasant and welcome balance.
I had a glass of house Cabernet Sauvignon. For me wine is all about the finish. The full-bodied wine had a smooth finish with no tannin after taste

We had a dinner on a Saturday evening and the place was crowded with locals. We hopefully booked our table in advance and we did get it right on time.

Food selection is somehow limited - which I kind of prefer vs. long lists - but with variety of fish and steaks. I personally went for the clams to start with (excellent!) and for the rib-eye steak, delicious.

Waiter recommended a nice - and not too expansive - Merlot to make our dinner and we all enjoyed a great moment.

The only comment is that it might not be the best place for a romantic and quite dinner as tables are quite close to each others.

We found this restaraunt by chance ,our first evening. The steak was great. Service good. Ambience good. We got there at six pm on a saturday and it was getting busy then! Booking advisable.
Went back in the week and this time a jazz musician was playing. He was good. Recommend the pepper AND bearnaise sauces.
