Description: John's Grill has been a San Francisco tradition since 1908. This historic restaurant is one of the city's oldest and most famous and is a favorite of celebrities who enjoy great steaks, expertly prepared fresh seafood with excellent service and a one of a kind atmosphere. John's Grill was a setting in author Dashiell Hammetts, The Maltese Falcon. The restaurant has earned many tributes: it has been chosen as one of the 10 best by Esquire and featured in Gourmet Magazine. Live jazz nightly in the upper level dining room. ZAGAT RATED: Food 26 / Decor 24 / Service 25 / Cost $44 "Step back in time" at this circa-1908 Downtown "landmark", where "solid steakhouse fare" and "strong drinks" draw "tourists and locals alike"; "one of the last old-style SF eateries", it's also renowned as a "Dashiell Hammett hangout" (and a setting in The Maltese Falcon.)"

Had not realised realised the maltese falcon link before hand. Our hotel recommended it for steak.
Not cheap. The rib eye steak was $32.95 before tax. More expensive steak available. House 'bloody Bridget' cocktail was $9.95 with others at $11.

Overall great ambience with jazz guitarist playing upstairs and services was fine.
If we go back to SF would eat there again. Probably not for young kids though

In my opinion this place is very overrated. The service was so efficient you felt you were on a conveyor belt - get 'em in and get 'em out and get their money! The steaks, a fillet and a ribeye, were good, but not fantastic. I've had much better for a lot less money!

Disappointing visit to this well known restaurant. The service was poor, the steak I had was good served with seasonal veg which amounted ton8 peas and a pencil thin carrot. The motto appears to he get them in and get them out asap. Will not be returning.

A wonderful restaurant loaded with black and white pictures of Humphrey Bogart in the Maltese Falcon. Attentive staff, excellent food (especially the steak); split the salads because they are huge. I would definitely recommend John's Diner to anyone during a visit to San Francisco

I don't eat fish. DELICIOUS BURGER and my fish eating friends really seemed to enjoy their crab salads and rich lobster ravioli. Would definitely eat here again. Professional staff with smiles:)
