Description: The Chaya restaurant family originated when Hikage Chaya opened in Hayama, Japan. From this initial tea house, that opened 390 years ago, the Tsunoda family has expanded into French bistros and pastry shops throughout Japan and introduced the brand to the U.S. in 1984 with the opening of Chaya Brasserie in Beverly Hills. Since then, Chaya has opened locations in Venice, San Francisco, Downtown Los Angeles, and LAX. The cuisine at each restaurants can best be described as modern Japanese though each restaurant has a distinct personality reflecting their different locations. Corporate Executive Chef, Shigefume Tachibe is best known for pioneering modern Japanese cuisine and his contributions to the Asian-Fusion movement. His chef coat and knife are in permanent display in the Smithsonian. The most important tenet of Chaya's philosophy is high-level omotenashi (hospitality), bringing the Japanese teahouse tradition of warm and personal service to each guest.

“Excellent meal”
Reviewed January 24, 2014

Thoroughly enjoyed my dinner at Chaya. Started with sushi, and then ate the filet mignon. Both were very good.

Service is very good; the view of the bay bridge is exceptional; decor is nice; valet parking.

COMMENT: it is cold at night; outside seating is probably not a great idea.

“Wonderful evening”
Reviewed January 13, 2014

Had a wonderful dinner here on a Saturday night, with visitors from Europe. When I called to reserve a table for 4, I requested a table by the window, with a view of the Bay Bridge, and that’s exactly what we got. The ambiance with the lit-up Bay Bridge in the background was magical. And it just got better from there. The service, drinks and food were all outstanding. We especially enjoyed the dumpling appetizer (filled with lobster and scallops), and their famous bread pudding. Oh, the bread pudding! It was to die for! One of the best desserts I have ever had in my life! In our group of four, three of us ordered it, and we all inhaled it. Highly recommend this place for a special dinner!

“Excellent Service”
Reviewed January 11, 2014

I met a friend for dinner a Chaya at the end of October while travelling on business. The decor, atmosphere, music, lighting, etc. were beyond expectations. The staff was very attentive. And, finally, the wine selection, and food was outstanding. My dining partner and I enjoyed our meal. I will definitely be back.

“Great restaurant”
Reviewed January 2, 2014

The kobe beef roll is delicious (shrimp tempura, crab, avocado, spicy aioli). The view of the bridge is awesome at night.

Try not to seat near the entrance because customers do not use the revolving door and you will freeze.
