We recently were in San Francisco and had a wonderful meal at Helmand Palace. We get to SF about once a year and always make a point of having dinner here. The prices are very reasonable for SF as all of the entrees are less than $20 and most are under $15. Our grown children are vegetarians and there are lots of options for them. We started with the Aushak and Kaddo appetizers which are available with or without meat, and both ways were excellent. For dinner we had Qabelee, a pallow rice flavored with cinnamon, mixed with lamb, carrots, raisins, the special vegetarian entree and Aushak as an entree. Since we had been wine tasting in Sonoma we brought our own wine and felt that the $15 corkage fee was reasonable. There is no parking nearby but they validate for $5 a lot 3 blocks away.

We rented a vacation apartment around the corner on Union and had walked by this Afghan restaurant during our stay. On the last night, we finally went in and was SO happy we did!! It was the perfect ending meal of our trip. My husband raved about the Lawand, and I absolutely loved the aushak! We added a half carage of wine and the meal was under $40!!! Would eat at this restaurant again and really hope to do so on our next trip! It was our first experience with Afghan food and we loved it –
