“First rate Greek experience”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

Absolutely top notch in every respect , food, service, ambiance and while a little on the expensive side not outrageously so and good value for an exceptional dining experience. Plan on having some choices from the appetizer/small plate menu of wonderful Greek delicacies, perfect for sharing. Lamb and fish dominate the main course menu but with enough other choices to satisfy anyone including vegetarians, and everything perfectly prepared and served.
Reservations well in advance are essential.

Reviewed April 8, 2013 via mobile

Wow. The food, service, atmosphere, the vibe.... All top notch. Great wine! We had zuch cakes and baked feta. Outstanding. The waiter recommended a lamb special and a chicken dish. Perfection. This is clearly of our best dining experiences in many. Well worth it!!

One of the best restaurants in San Francisco. I've been to this restaurant many times and the outd
standing service is always consistent. Well trained staff, great wine list, great ambience, spacious yet cozy.

“thankful that we were able to experience this again!”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

We returned to Kokkari for our second time, and it was not a disappointment! The food was as scrumptious as we remembered, they went out of their way to handle a food allergy, and our server, Charles was beyond spectacular! Don't miss the chance to visit this fine restaurant if you are in the area!

“Good food, great ambiance!”
Reviewed April 6, 2013

I had looked forward to eating at this upscale Greek restaurant after having it recommended by a friend who lives in San Francisco. It very nearly lived up to the excellent recommendation. The restaurant is tastefully decorated and has an opulent old-world feel to it. I had heard that it was a bit noisy, but I did not find it to be so. We were seated in a back room, and while the room was not as attractive visually as the two front rooms (though still quite nice!), it was perhaps quieter. The service was prompt, friendly, and very helpful. The pace of serving was perfect--enough time to linger over each course and converse, yet time did not drag. The lamb chops and spit-roasted lamb were both perfectly prepared and spiced. There was a special goat stew (yes, goat stew) that melted in your mouth, it was so tender. The one disappointment of the entrees was the moussaka, which was well-flavored, but there was a very scant layer of custard in proportion to the large amount of ground lamb. I would have preferred a more balanced dish, with nearly equal proportions of custard and meat. Nevertheless, it was quite good--just not as I expected. Desserts (baklava and semolina custard filled pastries, both topped with house made ice cream) were excellent.

Aside from the minor complaint about the moussaka, two other negatives kept this restaurant from earning five stars in my opinion. The wine was outrageously expensive ($15 a glass!!) and the spit-roasted lamb came with potatoes that were clearly reheated and still cold in the middle. However, my overall impression of this restaurant was that it is an enjoyable place to dine.
