“Tale of two experiences--lunch great, dinner not so much”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

I went on a Friday for lunch and the whole street was hopping. The food was tremendous and the service was great. I am not a mussles fan, but these are unbelievable. Get them.

Then I returned Sunday evening to recreate the experience--and didn't. The street was
dead...don't go on Sunday. They seriously had the second string wait staff who was unfriendly.
Too bad. I would try a different restaurant on the street on another night or during lunch.

“Fun French fish fest”
Reviewed March 26, 2013 via mobile

"Plouf" is the French onomatopoeic word for the sound of a splash, like a medium sized cartoon fish might make when it jumps. This small, informal bistro serves seafood, as the name implies. The location has ambiance to burn, hidden away in a funky alley garlanded with festive Christmas style outdoor lights. The mostly male staff, many of whom appear to be French speakers, sport the classic horizontally striped French shirts.

French restaurants can be intimidating or snooty but there was no attitude here, as both the service and decor were friendly and informal.

Although I am told Plouf can be packed on weekends, we walked in without a reservation on a Monday night and got a table right away. I really enjoyed the fried oyster appetizer, which came with a very tasty onion and cabbage salad. My main course was salmon, which was also very nicely done and reasonably priced.

My friend had a prix fixe menu that included a salad he said was very good, followed by a dish of the house specialty, moules (mussels) in the shell with frites ( french fries) and a dessert of profiteroles that would have been very tempting, had I not been on a diet and allergic to the pistachios with which it was garnished.

Prices were reasonable and I would definitely return to this place with my girlfriend next time we are in San Francisco.

“Nice little bistro in the heart of town.”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

This is in the very quaint pedestrian Belden Alley. Judging from the tiles on the floor, the building is about 75-85 years old. The venue is long and narrow, the service very friendly and efficient, some individual booth like seating with high back partitions. Food was very delicious although the interesting sounding grits/horseradish with melted cheddar cheese disappointed, the oysters,
were superb. It has an abundance of covered outdoor seating almost as large as the indoor section. All-in-all a very enjoyable and experience in this city which has restaurants galore to
choose from.

We went to this restaurant with friends that recommended it. It is one of their favorite places to eat in San Francisco. The location was great and interesting. The food was great and also the service. We enjoyed beer and also wine before and during the meal. Everything was great.

“Best of Belden Place”
Reviewed February 15, 2013

Plouf is my favorite restaurant in Belden Place, that crowded alleyway in downtown, filled with small restaurants jostling each other for space. It's very French or Belgian, and wonderful for outdoor dining (as all the Belden places are.) I love the moules frites!
