So on our trip the hotel recommended this place for breakfast. A lot of locals line up here almost an hour prior to opening. It is a great place to wait in line and eat breakfast here if you are foodie. Breakfast is pretty good, better than most breakfast places. It is a unique place to go, I recommend that if you do want to try this place out, line up prior to opening cause the line just gets longer as the day goes by.

Walked about a mile each way here for breakfast four of the six days we visited this wonderful city. Yes, the line is long, and they have a somewhat odd system of ordering and waiting for seats, but they have been around for years, so it must work for them!

Everything is super fresh, made to order, very generous proportions. Had the paisan eggs benedict with grilled peppers and onions, a fantastic spicy omlette with habenero chicken sausage, and the lovely fruit salad with fresh figs.

Darling and very patient wait staff. I work at an Atlanta area restaurant known for the line out the door, so sometimes that will lead people to lower a rating online. The wait here is part of the fun. You'll be surrounded by locals and tourists from all over the globe. Get here early, bring a paper, and watch the tai chi in Washington Square while you wait your turn.

Particularly in San Fran, where the produce is superb and there are so many places at which to enjoy a delicious breakfast or brunch - without the trial-by-queueing required to eat at Mama's. It's so hyped up that people feel they have to stand there and wait; and, of course, once you've wasted an hour or two of your life in line, it has to be worthwhile, right? This circle obviously works to the restaurant's advantage, but not to its customers.

Ist place I tried on 1st trip to SF in 1972. Back then Mama herself did the market shopping at 5 am and the waitertresses were hippie girls. Still a great place for breakfast and lunch. By chance ended up in SF for the Italian festival on the 1st weekend in October. Enjoyed hanging at Washington Square, watching the 2 hour + parade and the airshow commemorating the Navy Fleet Week. The hungries hit and we just got into Mama's before the 3 pm close. (They are closed all day Monday.) The young lady at the register (you order and pay before getting a table)was super nice in spite of the crush of patrons. Split a Mama burger w/ mama potatoes. Both were as good as it gets. Waiteress was as nice as hostest. Will go back for one of their speciallty french toast meals. NO charge cards.

You have to eat here. The breakfasts are fantastic & its a great little place. We visited in September, mid week. We had to queue for about 15 minutes, a little time to wait for such a great experience. The whole atmosphere in Mamas is just lovely and the food we had was really fresh, large portions & extremely tasty. If we go back to San Francisco, Mamas will definitely be on our list of must visit places!
