“Stay away from the chicken for two”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2013

Zuni cafe is one of the San Francisco restaurants that is well known for its
longevity in a city that sees restaurants come and go. And although it has
an excellent oyster bar, a lively young professional TGIF group, and we
were given good service, we were very disappointed after ordering their
"iconic" chicken for two at a cost of $49.00. THe cost would have been fine
if the chicken lived up to its reputation, but it did not. It didn't even come close.
Billed as a dish that takes one hour from time of ordering, we ordered anyway
and after we had salad and enjoyed our drinks, the chicken was served at the
same time as our guest's tuna, (which was very good). It took 50 minutes to
be exact . It is served with a bread salad underneath and greens on top. Bread
salad was also a miss. This opinion has been expressed by other reviewers
so either Zuni needs to improve their chicken or take it off the menu. It is
a disservice to the restaurant's reputation as well as to its customers to leave
it as is. Prices are high here and one is paying for the privilege of being at the
Zuni as well as the food. In fairness, our Caesar salad was very good, our
deserts, a flourless chocolate cake that as been on the menu forever and a lemon
curd tart were delicious. Last but not least, I had their Bloody Mary with balsamic
vinegar (you have to specify the balsamic over the worcestshire) and onions that
was truly delicious. Now THAT should be the iconic
drink, rather than the chicken being the iconic dish!!!!!!!!!!

“Not all you would hope for”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2013 via mobile

Zuni was recommended to me by a fellow tourist from the UK and I was encouraged by the reviews. We were disappointed: we had three courses inside an hour deposited on the table. The lauded Caesar salad was a large number of leaves with dressing, ok but not special for 10 dollars. My quail was very very pink and the radicchio very very charred....a lack of attention to detail in the kitchen. This is not surprising given the large number of covers and it all felt like a business more than a great culinary experience. Overall, not worth the money.

“A fun experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2013

I stumbled into this restaurant having walked for ages thro a culinary desert in the San Francisco Civic Center area. It was rather like being in one of those reality TV cooking shows .. with the bustle of the kitchen going on right up close to my table. Were these people actors or genuinely zealous cooks? On balance I think its the latter! Sensible prices for the special experience. Most memorable part of my visit to SF.

Way overpriced for what you get - better off spending less or more elsewhere. very average meal for the tab. Best Caesar Salad around however.

“Highly recommended”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2013

My partner and I had lunch at Zuni whilst visiting SF for a couple of days. Food and service were first class. Had the Chorizo entree and fennel sausage as a main - both excellent. For dessert chose a blue cheese - a little disappointing but does not distract from overall experience. Would recommend a visit and I have been told that the chicken dish (takes an hour) is the best. Another interesting fact is that this restaurant has been around for over 30 years - says it all really!
