I entertained a group of customers here and everyone had a great time. We shared a plate of oysters to start - a fresh and briny way to kick off a good meal. The pretzels were a big hit and all the entrees superb! I enjoyed the arctic chat while others enjoyed the pasta, pork chop and sole. The food was fabulous. The wine list extensive and the atmosphere enjoyable. I will be back!!

We arrived after 8 on a Tuesday night in August and the place was packed! San Franciscans really love to eat out, so if you're interested in going anywhere downtown, even during the week, make sure to reserve ahead of time.

Thankfully the hostess did a great job at finding us a small table for 2 and we were seated within 5 minutes. Our server could have been a bit more forthcoming with conversation to make it a bit more of a personable experience, but she was pleasant and attentive enough. They have an extensive drink list but our server could have been a bit more knowledgeable about the wine list, as I asked typical questions about flavour and level of oak vs stainless steel aging, but she was unable to answer them.

My husband ordered the Coq au Vin which was excellent and I had the 7oz filet, which was beautifully done. The service overall was good but the food made up for it - definitely a great place for and intimate dinner but plan ahead if you're in a big group (Not appropriate for families).

Outstanding, creative drink menu; excellent entrees, attractive build-out and good seating. Good wine list. Nothing but pluses for Absinthe.

The food and service at Absinthe is excellent. It's in a fun neighborhood in Hayes Valley. It can be difficult to find street parking but we found a space very close by. We went to Absinthe for our anniversary.vWe started off with the shoe string French fries with sweet onion aioli and smoky tomato ketchup which is a must. We also had the spicy pork meatballs which they served with Parmesan baguette. The meatballs were tender and flavorful. We had a delicious Caesar salad but the one negative is that there is an additional charge for anchovies which the waitress didn't mention. For our entree, we had the lamb shank which was very tender and coq au vin which is served in a cast iron vessel, keeping the dish piping hot! It is served with thin slices of French bread which absorbs the sauce. For dessert, the chocolate pot de creme withe creme chantilly is a must! Since it was our anniversary, they also served us an extra dessert of vanilla ice cream with a sable Breton cookie on a plate that had happy anniversary written in chocolate. The food and service was wonderful. I would recommend Absinthe to anyone who is looking for French bistro fod.

We dined here on the recommendation of our concierge - traditional French bistro. Truly spectacular.
