The park is amazing, with tons of history, vegetation, museums, etc. I highly recommend visiting the park, plus its free! We were actually at the park during the Outside Lands Concert, but during times we didn't want to see any of the music acts we would wander around the park. We did see the Conservatory of Flowers and the California Academy of Science which are awesome!! I am not sure what parking is like, but talking the Muni is really easy and cheap.

While we were there there was a free bluegrass festival which drew a crowd of around 250 thousand. A great park with lots of activities

We went to the park initially so that we could visit the deYoung Museum. Vermeer's 'Girl with the Pearl Earring' painting was on display. It's a graet museum!
While there we also visited the Japanese Tea Garden which was delightful. This park has so much to offer, the time we had there was just not long enough. Would love to go back when we take another tripmto San Francisco.

Japanese Tea Garden, DeYoung museum, California Academy of Sciences, paddle boats, hikes, Bison, windmills, Botanical Gardens, soccer fields, polo fields, biking, concerts, spots for BBQ's. San Francisco's Central Park. Of course there are more hippies and homeless in this park then in NYC. Generally totally harmless.

If you have never been, don't miss the G.G. State Park, it is much more than just the Japanese Garden although that is worth the trip alone.
