“Excellent hotel”

Was little apprehensive given some of the reviews posted, particularly about the room and bed sizes. However, for us this was unfounded. We had room 109 which had not one but two queen size beds!!! The bathroom was spacious, extremely clean and had a fantastic shower. There wasn't a hairdryer in the room but I asked at reception and they had one for me to use, no problem. The staff on reception were very friendly and informative. The Haight District has plenty of places to eat and drink nearby. However if you want to head into town just walk to the top of the road and take number 71 bus which will take you for the small sum of $2 per person. An excellent reasonably priced hotel which I would highly recommend.

On the positive side and most importantly, the staff were very friendly and the accommodation was clean and tidy. Otherwise, the hotel was uninspiring. Our room was tiny and so was the bed. Unless you are small, you will not fit under the shower and if you try you will most certainly bang your head on the shower basket (which might knock sense into some people!) The garden is not very useful because it is shared with the restaurant next door, is unavailable after 5:00pm and we found nowhere suitable to sit. The stairs are steep and narrow, so over-sized luggage is probably not advisable. The free WiFi was extremely patchy. I know this is a budget hotel and San Francisco is expensive. Even so, I felt the hotel did not provide sufficient incentive for us to return.

This hotel is a bargain in a terrific neighborhood. The Lower Haight is so vibrant and so well served by public transportation that you won't miss staying downtown. Besides, this is a lot closer to Golden Gate Park. Get the staff's suggestions on places to eat. There are dozens of places nearby.

Shana gets well deserved rave reviews for her charm and help, but actually Monty and Gigi were extremely helpful as well. Have the hotel staff book shuttle service back to the airport for you. It's cheaper than anything you can arrange on your own. Hats off to the housekeepers too--the place is super clean.

That said, the rooms are basic and small. Room 111 was quiet enough, and big enough to unroll a yoga mat, but if I hadn't had an iPad, reading in bed would have been impossible given the lighting. The sink is in the room, as opposed to the toilet/shower room, which is convenient, but it would have been nice to have a towel rack by the sink. And Kleenex? What hotel doesn't supply Kleenex? Lastly, there is a ceiling fan, but no other apparent source of climate control. You never really need AC in San Francisco, but when it hits 40 at night, some heat would have been nice.

Despite this, I would definitely stay at Metro again. You would be hard pressed to find a better deal.

Room Tip: Ask the staff to describe the rooms to you. 111 was quiet, but with a glass block window, so no view...

We stayed here on a Thursday-Saturday. The location of the hotel is great if you want to get a feel of what 'real' San Francisco feels like, away from the downtown area. The hotel itself was very clean and accomodating. We had a room with a queen bed and the room was SMALL - the two of us and our suitcase barely fit into the room. The other thing is that there is no elevator; carrying our 50lb suitcase up to the 3rd floor was something that I wouldn't want to repeat!

I would think that parking would be easy in this part of the city but we had to look for 5-10 minutes on average for a street parking spot. We were always able to find one within 4 blocks (Page and Oak seemed to be the best bets)

All in all though, this hotel definitely got the job done. Good price for accomodations that we needed. If you can get over the small spaces you'll enjoy your stay

My husband and I are from Minnesota so we had no idea how to pick a hotel here. Right off the bat we were very frazzled because we're not used to the hustle and bustle of a city like this. WARNING! Do NOT travel to San Francisco during rush hour times! We had no idea where to park. So I called the front desk attendant as we circled the block. She instructed us to park in the white zone in front and she would help.
I must say, first impression wasn't good. The hotel looks shabby from the outside and the lobby was boring and small. But my view of it changed pretty fast. The front desk lady was MORE than helpful. She answered all of our questions to the best of her knowledge; helped us find parking where we didn't have to move our car, warned us of bad areas, helped us how to learn to use the city buses, and more! Honestly, it's basic. But has enough essentials that I require in a hotel.

Pros:
VERY clean bathroom
Room has a tv
Room has a retro feel
Love that the room has a ceiling fan
Rooms are tidy
Front door of hotel locks at 12 am (you get a key to get in if you go out)
Hallway closets and dressers stocked with blankets, pillows, hair dryers, lady toiletries, and more.
Located in a safe feeling neighborhood with lots of people out and about
When booking, the description of the room is very accurate and truthful (we stayed in room 112, the description was; facing the garden, can maybe get a glimpse of a tree or two. I appreciated that because that was then exactly what I expected so I was okay with it. A lot of hotels aren't that truthful
The front desk people are very friendly
Free wifi
Parking close by

Cons:
Very basic (but enough)
Definitely not the same feel as a chain hotel
Pretty small rooms
No smoking (could also be a pro for some)

We stayed for two nights at The Metro Hotel and found our double room (on the second floor, overlooking the patio garden) to be small but very comfortable. The room had a good sized flatscreen, a wardrobe and clean ensuite with a shower. There was also free Wifi, although the signal strength was quite weak. Perhaps this was just an isolated occurence or due to lots of people using it at once. Anyway, as it was free, we weren't particularly bothered.

Although The Metro Hotel is clearly not a Five Star hotel experience, it is very good value. In fact, the customer service was unrivalled during my trip to California. The staff all made an effort to be both welcoming and helpful; Shana especially so. As my boyfriend and I were not in SF for very long, she helped organise a great itinerary to make the most of our stay (so if you're reading this, thank you Shana!)

There are even lots of great amenities within walking distance of the hotel. I especially liked the comic shop, Golden Gate Park and looking around Haight Ashbury. Incidentally, as the hotel does not serve breakfast, I really recommend checking out Pork Store Cafe on Haight Street. The pancakes are awesome.

At first glance the location of this hotel looks to be a bit out of the way but the transport links are so good that it doesn't matter at all. In fact, it was nice not to be staying in the busiest parts of town and made us more inclined to explore.

We had an en-suite room with a queen bed and it was a good size for the 2 of us to move about, store suitcases etc.

The rooms are comfortable and cleaned daily and the staff are very helpful and keen to recommend places to eat/drink. There are actually a lot of nice restaurants in the area immediately around the hotel and I would recommend trying a few of them out. Golden Gate Park and Castro are reasonably short walks and there are several bus routes operating in the close vicinity (6/71 down Haight run into downtown, 24 runs along Divisadero towards Castro and beyond).
