First of all, I have to say that I have stayed at a hostel only once before in Chicago, and that was a surprisingly pleasant experience. With that said, I don't remember it being smelly like this one, (although after a while you get used to it), the beds so uncomfortable (you can feel the springs in the mattress), or the breakfast so limited (A bagel or two waffles, A piece of fruit and coffee). The kitchen, which is separate from their Cafe area where breakfast dispensed, was good, the bathrooms were OK, even though their dispensers of complementary soap and shampoo were always empty when I showered. The staff was always friendly to my wife and I, no complains there. I like going to hostels because they have a lot of information about places to visits and special offers, but the recommended places here were just OK. The high point was the location, a nice park in a nice neighborhood with OK transport. Overall, I don't think I would return to this hostel.

Our Girl Scout troop stayed here for two nights on a bridging trip. What a great location! Steps from the Metro stop that would take us to the bridge. Steps from Fisherman's Wharf and Ghirardelli Square. Steps from a grocery story to load up on snacks and items to prepare dinner in the hostel's huge kitchen! The staff was always friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the free breakfast each morning in the Cafe and appreciated that they were open and had a good menu to choose from the rest of the day. The girls met up with another girl scout troop and they watched a movie together in the theater. I would recommend this for any Scout troop wanting to stay in S.F. What a wonderful trip!

Room Tip: Our troop reserved private rooms. We had to pay for a few extra bunks but it was totally worth it t...

Great location for our school field trip, within easy walking distance of Ghirardelli Square. Kitchen was also a good size for our large group of students, and employees, though understaffed, were helpful and friendly. Negatives: bathrooms weren't the cleanest, though comparable to other hostels we've used, and the mattresses are squeaky, thin, and uncomfortable due to painful springs.

The location of this hostel was probably the best one I have been in so far...you walk down a hill and have a view of the Golden Gate bridge and Alcatraz, Continue to walk down the hill and you walk along a pretty waterfront. The staff were all friendly and helpful, breakfast was decent. Only downside was internet went out a few times. It seemed like a bit more money than usual hostels but for the location, I didn't mind paying it at all.

I have been staying at the SF Youth Hostel at Fisherman's Wharf for 13 years! This place is a perfect place to for a home based to explore San Francisco. The rooms are clean, the common areas are welcoming, clean and cozy. The views are fantastic and the access to the city through public transportation is wonderful!

Four showers for 100 women makes for a terrible experience. As a fellow traveller said: "camping showers." The staff is nasty: they could careless about anything unless you are an attractive female and then they will give you "special attention." The rooms are dirty and smell. The smell is probably from the old carpet. There were always strange people sleeping in the living room--didn't they get a room? Location is a bit far from the city, although the view was nice.

This hostel was a terrible experience for me and my friend.
over all cleanness was pretty bad. we entered our allocated room that smelt like musk. I made my bed (old plastic foam mattress) and went to lay down, i felt my back starting to get wet. jumped up and lifted to old mattress up to find some one had pee'd the bed the night before.i went and showed the girl at the counter and all she did was give me new sheets and said i could sleep in the top bunk. the next morning i asked for a refund- for the worst hostel stay i have ever had- and the man at the counter was so un helpful and didn't understand how unacceptable and unhygienic the situation was.

Will never stay here again.
