Green Tortoise Hostel - San Francisco
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 6, 2013

I stayed in the Green Tortoise en-route from Auckland to London for four nights in February 2011. All i can say is that out of the 40+ hostels i have stayed in worldwide, this is one of the best (having stayed in more since, it still rates as one of the best).

The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, for example, they have made small directions / instruction cards about how to find things (supermarket, cafes etc) meaning you don't have to remember the instructions.

The atmosphere is excellent as Green Tortoise, although it is a bigger hostel i found it was still quite easy to meet and talk to people. I would recommend getting involved with cooking the communal dinners as you meet like-minded people!

The rooms are comfortable and safe, each bed has a locker, reading light and power socket which is great. The toilets and showers are very good, they are all separate (i.e. one toilet and one shower in each) which brings welcomed privacy. Also a massive bonus is the free internet etc

The location is also great, walking distance from Fishermans' Wharf amongst other places.

Not sure i can say anything else to recommend it!! All in all, a great effort by all concerned :)

Room Tip: All are pretty good.

I had great expectations of this place after reading reviews and speaking to other travellers. I was not disappointed! Staff were very friendly and the bed rooms were clean. The breakfast was good and free meals are provided 3 nights a week. I only sampled this one night but I was really impressed. It's a really social hostel with plenty of opportunity to meet people. It's close to a lot of the major tourist attractions. There are also a lot of nice restaurants and fun bars close to the hostel also. I should mention that it's surrounded by a lot of strip clubs but I wouldn't let this deter you. The only negative thing I have to comment on is the quality of the bathrooms. A few times I had a hard time getting access to a bathroom even though I tried to go a quieter times of the day. Also a few of the were a little on the dirty side and smelled of damp.

Glad you had a good time with us. We try to ensure that this vibe is felt throughout the hostel. We are getting into our busiest season as travelers from around the world come to San Francisco and choose the Green Tortoise for their place to call temporary home so we do apologize if this resulted in our facilities being crowded at times. Hope to see you again soon!

Great location, close to the city and great restaurants. Staff very helpful and good internet access. Bed and bathroom facilities very good. Red light district close by but not a hassle and never felt unsafe. Only annoyance was the night club business on ground floor that stays in action until precisely 2.00am most nights and its dance music reverberates through the building until then. I'm surprised that not many reviewers mention it because it sure as hell kept me awake until 2.00 am and then 'all quiet on the western front !'.

Room Tip: Balance getting a window breeze versus being away from disco noise.

Peter - thanks for your wise words. At the hostel we definitely like to create a balance for guests that are looking for all sorts of different travel experiences.
Some rooms are bright and breezy and get the fabulous vibe from North Beach floating in. The Restaurant and Lounge downstairs, Horizon, holds fun events on the weekends, including our famous Beer Olympics. Other rooms are bright and breezy and provide a quieter space for travelers not looking for the party side of SF. Definitely give us a heads up on your next SF visit as to what you need as far as room goes and we will try our best to find you the perfect spot in our hostel. Safe travels!

Stayed here 4 nights in a 5 bed mixed dorm. I had a great time from start to finish in this place. It is located in North Beach, about 20 minutes walk from Fisherman's wharf and close to a couple of bus lines, so it was quite easy to get around.

The hostel is located in a party area of town and there are a few strip clubs nearby, but I never had any problems walking around the area at night. The pubs and clubs generate a bit of noise at night; it didn't really bother me but may keep a lighter sleeper up. I was on the 3rd floor, which helped keep the noise down a bit.

The hostel itself was great. The free daily breakfast was easily the best of all the hostels I've stayed at in the US: fresh fruit, bagels with all the toppings, and eggs you can cook up yourself. Free dinner was provided 3 nights a week, which consisted of a vegetarian pasta, salad and some bread; there's plenty of great food to be had in the area, but this is fine if you're on a budget. Free wi-fi and Internet terminals were provided, though the wi-fi coverage didn't extend past the common areas.

The dorm room I stayed in was fine. The sink in the room was nice, and the under bed lockers were nice and roomy. The beds themselves were solid wood and didn't squeak when I rolled around in them. The bed was comfortable enough for a bunk.

What I liked most about the place was the atmosphere. Unlike some other hostels I've stayed in, everyone was friendly and happy to chat. Travelling solo, I didn't feel alone while staying there. The place really does fit in with the fun, laid back vibe of San Francisco.

I left after 4 days wishing I had more time to explore the city. I would come back to the Green Tortoise in a heartbeat.

Stayed for 4 nights in October and loved this hostel. We had a double room with dunk beds and although basic suited all of our needs. The staff were friendly and helpful and the rooms were very clean and comfy. The common room as you come in was a great spot to met up with other guests and we made lots of new friends during our stay there.

The location of the hostel is very central, close to North Beach, Chinatown, Fishermans Wharf and Downtown. The staff also were very good at helping with directions.
