“Wonderful hotel...book now!”
Reviewed January 9, 2005

Just returned from a four night stay at The Argonaut. The hotel is situated in the best bit of Fisherman's Wharf. On the whole the Wharf is tacky, but not as bad as I expected. The proximity to the cable car stop is a definate bonus (especially if you are on your own and worried about safety).

The staff were friendly at all times and always acknowledged you, and you always received a friendly welcome from the doorman. The decor, although wacky, is very tasteful and not at all overpowering.

I had a room facing the courtyard (a view would have been nice, but I was hardly in the room during daylight hours). It was totally spotless, you would honestly think that it had been furnished and renovated especially for your visit. Lots of extra touches that set the hotel apart, such as flat screen TV, DVD, Starbucks coffee, modern phone and clock radio.

Free internet in the lobby was a huge benefit and was not abused.

Ate breakfast in the hotel a few mornings and was impressed with the food and the service (unlike some other reviewers.)

I would definately return to The Argonaut on my next visit to San Francisco- during my time there I saw no other hotel that I would rather stay in. If you plan on staying at the Wharf, stay here. The other chain hotels (Holiday Inn, Radisson etc) look run down and dated from the outside.

Stayed in August 2004 for 6 nights too many. After the first night when we could hear EVERYTHING in the adjacent rooms from normal talking to laughing and from in-room movies to neighbor's bathroom visists, we should have left. Second night was the worst as there was a party in the next room from about 11:00 pm - 1:30 am. The staff did not think the noise level was anything to complain about and told us such. Additionally, the front desk was less then friendly when we cashed traveler's checks, even though they said it was policy to cash them. And to top off, the doormen seemed to think it wasn't their duty to hold open doors or greet patrons. I vacation at least one week a year in San Francisco, and I would NEVER stay at this hotel again.

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Argonaut in September 2003 as the first night of a 3 week touring holiday in the states.
It surpassed all our expectations. We arrived at 3am UKT as zombies and the staff were wonderful and jested with us which made us really welcome.
The room was superb and contained all sorts of marvellous goodies to play with.. eg DVD player..
Not sure about breakfast as we found a marvellous diner down the street and ate there for that genuine USA experience.
The location was excellent and _just_ on the edge of all the attractions so it was not too noisey.
On the day that we checked out, the hotel arranged for a car to take us to the airport... we expected one of the local cab firms to roll up, but we were astounded when we went outside and there was a lincoln towncar sitting waiting for us.
Top Marks!!

There's a very good reason this place is at the top of this list - it is absolutely magnificent.

Superb location - right across the road from the wharves, right next to the Cable Car, views of the Bridge, but it's what they have done with this location that makes it superb.

The hotel is in a restored warehouse, and the attention to detail throughout is wonderful with exposed beams and bricks making this a standout building. The rooms are magnificently decorated in a nautical theme, the lobby is very well done, and front desk staff, porters, doormen, everyone, extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the city and its surrounds.

The wine reception was a nice touch, as were the two free internet terminals in the lobby area, and the attached Blue Mermaid restaurant on site was so good we ate there three nights in a row.

For cheap breakfasts there's also a Starbucks out back.

I've stayed in many great hotels around the world, but this is without a doubt my favourite. Only 1 gripe - leave the car at home or ensure your room rate includes parking - they charge $32 a day!

A truly wonderful hotel.

We stayed at the Argonaut for 3 nights and thought it was a great hotel. The rooms were nice, well equipped and very clean. The free wine tasting each evening at 5pm was an added bonus and all staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel is in a great location for all the main tourist attractions in San Francisco.

I stayed at the Argonaut last July after reading the site reviews and was delighted that it lived up to all my expectations and beyond. My room was extremely spacious and spotless with all the extras I needed. From the jolly doorman who gave me such a friendly welcome to the desk staff who greeted me by name at every contact, I cannot fault the staff. After the stuffy elegance of European hotels, the Argonaut was a breath of fresh air with its cheerful decor and unpretentious warmth! The location is terrific. My one gripe was that there was no food available after 10.00 pm when the downstairs restaurant closes - as well as all food outlets in the nearby vicinity. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to any one whether travelling alone or with a family.

Nice hotel in convenient wharf location. Modern rooms with a nice touch - wine served in the lobby 5-6pm. However, the breakfast in the adjacent resturant was terrible. Poor service and awful coffee, suggest trying the cafe down the road, much better!
