We had not visited the Bay Area in 14 years, and recently returned with our teenage children to enjoy all that The City has to offer. Historically, we had been against staying at Fisherman's Wharf, as most places years ago were old and the area was typically unpleasant. Well - we were really surprised upon our arrival ... the Wharf seems to have undergone a transformation. And likewise, The Argonaut Hotel is a wonderful spot for your San Francisco vacation. Our room was a king suite, was very clean, well-appointed, and provided plenty of space for all of us to relax after our day of sight-seeing. the hotel lobby has a very cool nautical vibe, and I particularly enjoyed daily happy hour with complimentary wine and local Anchor Steam beer! The location is perfect ... next door to Ghirardelli Square, the cable-car turnaround, and walking distance to Pier 39, bay cruises, great restaurants, etc. I highly recommend and will definitely stay there again on my next visit to the city by the bay.

Room Tip: Courtyard "view" rooms look over the interior of a lower-level roof ... and also are very...

Thanks, Gafan!
It's interesting -- you know how when a change happens incrementally and you're right in the middle of it, you sometimes don't notice?
Well, yours is the second review I've read so far today that comments on the improvements to the Wharf area, and it's a fun reminder to me about how the neighborhood has become more upscale and both bike- and pedestrian-friendly over the last year or two.
Thanks for visiting us, and I'm so glad you loved our location!

Just got back from San Francisco, where we stayed at the Argonaut. It's a great individual place with lots of little quirks. The rooms are spacious and clean and some must have good views (ours didn't but then we got it cheap). The staff were brilliant - Jennifer went to Walgreens when I enquired if they had black tea. And the bell boy sorted out my phone when it went peculiar - outstanding. Happy hour was very happy - the wine and beer are free! There was a charity box and most people did contribute. Never been to a hotel like it. The location was also good - just at the end of Fisherman's Wharf, just near the Hyde Street trolley cars. Overall it couldn't be faulted and we were made to feel very welcome - I'm glad I read the reviews on Tripadvisor before I booked. I've never written a review before but I just want people to know you don't have to stay in boring bland hotels.

I am glad you loved our quirks and the friendly folks like Jennifer, and of course our crew will never leave you bored! We are lucky to hire nice and interesting people and then, as managers, we know it's our job to let them be individuals and show genuine care in their own way. Shhh... don't tell the "big boxes," because, as you say, this is how we aim to win the race :)!

Just checked out of this hotel a little over 48 hours ago, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone...it was fantastic.
Firstly, the location is great - right on the Wharf and all the conveniences and sightseeing that comes with that, close to the trams and in what is arguably the prettiest part of San Francisco right down near the bay. Within a short stroll is a Ben & Jerry's, a bike hire place, a Walgreens, a Chipotle and countless other eateries and shops. A few blocks down is access to the boats leaving for Alcatraz and the famous seals on the pier. Lots of sights and sounds from street performers and street artists etc. The main tram terminal is in the park right across the street, and for $16/day you can buy an unlimited hop on hop off pass. Ghiradelli's Chocolate factory is only a block and a half stroll. The parkland around historic Fort Mason is maybe 500m away, taking you along a path along the waterfront of the bay. Lovely!
As for the hotel itself, the historic setting of The Cannery building (former converted cannery from many decades ago) is in itself appealing and adds a level of charm not found in many 'chain' hotels. The foyer has a warm inviting fire and Happy Hour with free drinks (or for an optional donation to a charity) takes place daily at around 5pm. The reception, concierge and porter staff were all friendly, courteous and helpful and went above & beyond what I'd normally expect to assist us.
Our room was on the top level (level 4) with two double beds. The bed wasn't the most comfortable I've ever slept in (on the softer side), but this is a matter of taste. The room was sufficiently spacious with a good sized wardrobe and plenty of hangers provided. Great selection of in-house movies and a well stocked (though typically expensive) mini bar with a unique variety of tasty extras.
We ordered Room Service one evening from the Blue Mermaid restaurant downstairs and was impressed with the flavours. I'd highly recommend the Crab & Corn Chowder in a Cob Loaf...yummm!
Checkout at 12pm instead of the measly 10am offered by so many other hotels was also very welcome.
Small touches such as the
While in San Fran, I'd highly recommend hiring bikes (or electric bikes as we did!) and cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge with lunch in Sausalito on the other side. The ferry home doubles as a bay cruise and takes you quite close to San Francisco and metres away from the seals at Pier 39. Sausalito is gorgeous in it's own right with it's lovely seaside village atmosphere, and this day out was a huge highlight of our stay. The hotel appears to be pet friendly with several pooches wandering in and out (on leads) with their owners, and a cute little welcome desk just for animals complete with a chalkboard covered in the names of current furry guests and a free treat box. I assume there are special rooms for pets, as ours certainly had no indication of ever having housed an animal.

Room Tip: Our room didn't have a view of the bay but make sure you request one when booking. Higher levels...

Thanks, oztourist76! I loved reading your travel journal, and of course we're so happy to see the Argonaut in the best supporting actor role! San Francisco is always the start, but we try to make everything that much more convenient for folks with the (first come, first served) free bike rentals, concierge recommendations, and nightly hosted wine party where visitors can also trade tips with one another. Thanks for checking us out, and for sampling the chef's famous chowder. Chowder in a bread bowl may be the "tourist thing to do," but for good reason: it's delicious!!

Perfect choice for exploring the marina with east access to the streetcars, local buses and the cable cars. The hotel is clean, well furnished and has polite and friendly staff. The rooms are big with Starbucks coffee and a coffee maker. The building looks good too making a positive place to come back to after a day out in the city.

Hi, Phil R! I'm delighted that you enjoyed the value/caliber of experience here, and YES in-room Starbucks coffee to kick start the day and free wine to reflect on one's adventures never hurts :). We'll make sure to share your praise with the housekeeping team for keeping things so spic 'n' span as well! Thanks for your review.

Great location for many attractions, walkable distances and nice view to the waterfront. Family friendly place to stay. Large clean and nice decorated rooms in a historic building. Friendly staff. Large lobby with happy hour as gathering arena to meet others. Surprised they did not offer local produce though... Large breakfast at the Mermaid and local wine tasting shop next door. Wonderful.

Room Tip: Ocean front has a good view.

Hello, fellow Norwegian kjersti2014!

Thanks so much for staying with us and posting your five-star review. With the hot weather upon us at the moment, we are enjoying sharing the local Anchor Steam beer with guests at that nightly hosted wine party. I'm glad you got to check it out and that you enjoyed the Blue Mermaid as well. I hope you got to try the Crab & Corn Chowder? A not-so-secret secret is that if you show the server that you're a hotel guest, you can enjoy a free cup with any entree at lunch and dinner. I love to mention it because the stuff is THAT GOOD. Really.

We stayed here three nights and had a great time. Happy hour was a lovely way to meet others and sample local produce. The hotel is well situated for visiting the gate and Alcatraz, and there is a large selection of superb restaurants on your doorstep. The cable car is literally just round the corner and don't forget to visit Ghiradeli's. The staff were super helpful and friendly with some great advice.

I'm delighted that the location here was perfect for you (with Bridge and Alcatraz views and the cable car next door, I realize we've got an unfair advantage, but we'll enjoy every moment of it :)!). We'll share your kudos with the staff as well. It's great to hear their recommendations on the local restaurants and whatnot made the difference in your stay. Thanks!

We stayed 3 nights in this hotel. The staff were great, the room clean and charming. The hotel puts on a free wine reception for an hour every night which was fab and we ate in the restaurant twice as the food was great and reasonably priced.
The location of the hotel was perfect, with everything being only a short walk or a bus ride.
A great hotel

Thanks so much, Sam I! These are the headlines we love to read. And thanks for mentioning how convenient it is to get around the city from here. To "Live Local," many of our guests ditch the car and hope a street car, cable car, bus, or even a taxi or stroll around to the many neighborhoods adjacent to the hotel like Marina/Cow Hollow, North Beach, Polk Gulch, etc. It's also fun to zip from here over the Golden Gate Bridge into Sausalito, Muir Woods, Point Reyes, or wine country. I hope you'll come back and keep exploring ;).
