“Our stay at The Argonaut Hotel”
Reviewed February 3, 2014 via mobile

My husband & I stayed 3 nights prior to our cruise to Hawaii. It was very welcoming & comfortable. I was happy that we had a good sized Bay view room. Nice to relax on the bed looking out at the bay after a busy morning of walking along the waterfront. Great location! Easy to access Cable Cars & Hop on Hop off Buses! Hotel was helpful with suggestions of tours & sights & maps. Loved the afternoon hot chocolate in the front of the lobby fireplace to warm up on a cool rainy day. We made good use of the provided umbrella! Only one rainy day but we had fun on the cable cars & shopping! Great wine for happy hour at the hotel! No complaints! Loved our stay here!

Thanks, Betty K! I'm glad we kept you cozy and dry with our hot cocoa. It seems our brief rain has already passed and the drought is still in full swing, though the visitors are not complaining ;).

This is a nice hotel and you can either walk or take public transportation most places you would care to go. I found the Argonaut on-line when looking to book a hotel for a 2 day stopover in San Francisco. Everyone said great things so we gave it a try. The rooms are nice and the beds comfortable. Everyone in the front desk area was helpful and smiling when we asked questions. Most of the pier attractions are easy to walk. A streetcar line is also steps from the frontdoor. If you are going a little further the "F" line transportation can get you near the BART station is a few short minutes. We only ate once in the restaurant for breakfast but it was nice. We told the server we were on a short time schedule and he took great care of us and got us out the door quickly.

Room Tip: We choose a room without a view because of a short stay and spending most of our time sightseeing th...

Hi, Toni H! Thanks for checking us out on your stopover, and thanks for selecting the Blue Mermaid for your speedy breakfast, too. I'm glad the server got you out on time to enjoy the city! I love the bacon quiche, and it is always a quick order, if not a diet food... in which case the oatmeal or yogurt parfait might be a better bet. Next time, check us out for the afternoon/evening chowder options. All hotel guests can present a card for free chowder with their entree!

Hello, pocious311! I'm so happy you feel there is no better place, and you loved our historic brick environs here! The building dates back to 1907 when it was constructed for the waterfront's real working cannery for Del Monte. I'm glad you got a chance to check out the National Park Service's Maritime Museum here at the hotel. There are actually our landlords since this is a historically preserved building :).

Great location almost on the waterfront. Quirky but interesting decor with cephalopod wallpaper in the bathroom. Comfortable bed and spotlessly clean. Friendly and helpful staff with a complimentary happy hour provided.
Highly recommend and will stay again on return from Europe.

We loved our stay at the Argonaut so much we have since recommended friends and family stay there too - and they loved it too! The rooms are decked out in a cool nautical theme and are immaculately clean. The beds super comfy and the room very well equipped. The kids loved the complimentary hot chocolate served in the warm and cosy lobby every afternoon. The staff were delightful. We loved the restaurant, ate breakfast and dinner there a few times and everything was delicious. The location was great, you can walk to the tram and they many attractions at Fisherman's Wharf. A great place to stay in a really beautiful city.

Hi, HappyFamilyMelbourne! I *love* to see this sort of rave review from one of Tripadvisor's key contributors. Thanks for checking us out and sharing your experience! It is always fun to see the kids overfill their cups with marshmallows during the hot chocolate hours. I hope they also got to play the Wii in the lobby, do the scavenger hunt, visit the treasure chest, or check out the free museum here? It's run by the National Park Service and real park rangers :).

We traveled to SF for our honeymoon and stayed at this hotel. Overall, the hotel was very nice. The bellman, John, was very helpful and friendly, as was the girl at the front desk. We stayed in the suite on the fourth floor. It was huge and very comfortable. The bathroom was awesome. It had a gigantic hot tub and nice amenities. It was also in a good location- within walking distance to Ghirardelli Square and other good restaurants.

The only issues were that it was very, very noisy and very, very expensive ($90 for a mediocre breakfast). We did not partake in the wine reception, but it did seem nice. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Thanks, PMK0118! Congrats and thank you for spending your honeymoon with us! I'm glad you liked the team here, and of course we'll share your special shout-out with John at the door. The suite soaking tubs are great, though of course next time you'll need to bring a glass of wine up from the wine hour to complete the experience :). I'd also be happy to look into any noise issues, though I suspect you might have experienced the suite that was having a water valve problem. I'm sorry about that, and happy to say our Chief Engineer has gotten to the bottom of it!

We arrived from a long flight from Japan at around 11am and immediately greeted by the very pleasant and friendly bell staff. They took us to the front desk where we were checked in and I was surprised to find our room was ready. It was a relief since we were so jet lagged. We went up to the 4th floor and just like the the rest of the hotel, the room was nicely decorated and comfortable. The bell man brought up our luggage shortly after and we ordered room service since we didn't feel like leaving the room. The prices are reasonable for room service, we ended up doing it again for breakfast the next day.

The location is excellent, right near the cable car station, Ghiradelli Square, and Fisherman's Wharf. You can easily walk to Pier 39 and also the Alcatraz Pier further down.

In the afternoon there is a hot chocolate station and then later on wine. We only tried out the hot chocolate.

There is lots of tourist stuff and restaurants around the hotel, only thing is I am surprised by how much I was bothered by people when I'd walk to and from Pier 39. There are homeless people, religious people, and worst of all there were people asking us for money but would try to trick us first. They'd stand in our way to get us to slow down and then make a comment or show a "badge" so we'd stop. We also came across a guy who was just walking around and screaming at people on the street not to look at him or go near him. None of this has anything to do with the hotel, but I was just surprised. I guess they are all just praying on tourists.
