“A great location, and a lovely hotel”
Reviewed October 4, 2013

A great find; ideal location, comfortable rooms, helpful staff and a the free wine and beer reception every evening engendered a lovely atmosphere. Right on Fisheman's Wharf, it was ideal for the waterfront, the trams and the cable cars, but felt far enough away from the touristy parts of the wharf. An easy walk to the ferries and out towards the Golden Gate; perfect to see the spectacle that was the America's Cup! Also nearby is Scoma's fish restaurant (see review) and the Buena Vista with its great local atmosphere and the best Irish coffee anywhere.

Room Tip: Get a room facing the wharf if you can, but as you won't be spending much time in it the inner o...

Thanks, Daniel H. America's Cup was such a dramatic and somewhat emotional experience here at the wharf. It was neat to be a part of history in the making! Like Scoma's restaurant, we are lucky to be in a convenient area but a bit "off the beaten path." Do let our crew here know if you are ever headed out into nearby neighborhoods, also -- we love to tell people our favorite spots in Chinatown, Polk Gulch, the Marina and so on. And food? Well, be careful you've got some time on your hands before you get a San Franciscan started talking about dining!

This is a Kimpton Hotel and was a great find. It is located right in the Warf. We took a package where it included breakfast and bikes. We rode the bikes across the Golden Gate Bridge into Sausalito and returned by ferry. We only planned half a day for this and wish we had planned a whole day and rode into the Redwood Forest. The hotel itself was really a great find. It's right in a central location, great valet parking (but expensive) and the cable car right around the corner. The lobby is large enough that we sat there with our friends and had a couple drinks before we went for dinner. Rooms are fresh and large, in a renovated historic building. We would absolutely return.

Hi, Brit W! Thanks for mentioning the spacious size of our rooms. That is one of my absolute favorite features of this historic building. I'm glad you loved the bike adventure--you were certainly more ambitious than I would have been! I'd bike to the nearest waterfront restaurant and call it a day :).

Had a really good week. Staying at the argonaut was fantastic, it's in a great location in fishermans wharf and it's easy to get around. The rooms are huge and the restaurant does some great food to but to top it all off they do free wine and beer between 5 and 6 every evening. Would recommend it to everyone travelling to San Francisco.

Hello, there, Mrsbecc,
This month, we are celebrating Halloween early with "Twisted" label's red and white wines. And since this is one of our "SF Summer" months, we're doing the Anchor Steam you mention as well. It is a great time to visit, though not if you want the full fog experience, I suppose. I"m glad you also loved the big rooms and the food in the restaurant. I hope you got to try to crab & corn chowder. It is our famous indulgence here, and it is free with a chowder card (from the front desk) and the purchase of an entree!

The Argonaut was a lovely place to stay, the nautical themed decor is fresh, our room was genereously sized and very comfortable. Rooms are very quiet, you dont hear any noise from the hall or rooms beside you. Hotel is located close to transport options so is a perfect base for getting around the city, and across the Golden Gate Bridge by bike, which we highly recommend as a thing to do while you are there. we would happily stay here again.

Thanks so much, Louise F! I'm delighted that you loved the feel of the Argonaut and the quiet night's rest in your room before the big days out exploring! We do offer free bike rental on a first-come, first-served basis each morning, so early birds can zip over to the Golden Gate at no charge. Perhaps with breakfast in Sausalito as a reward and a nice ferry boat to carry you back :).

I stayed here last week for a conference and have to say this hotel gets a well deserved 5 out of 5 for me! The hotels location was perfect in that it was just a little further away from the conference and Union Square so there was a slight "escape" factor. Located in Fisherman's Wharf area, it is in a touristy spot but so accessible to the rest of the city by bus, taxi or cable car.

We arrived to a friendly reception team who were most helpful and professional. The lobby has a buzz to it, in fact the hotel like the area has a lively atmosphere. Room was great, nautical theme, big, great comfortable bed, all the usual amenities you would expect. Cleanliness was great, the house keeping team made it feel like a new room every morning. The room is a definite 5 out of 5 and would make me book again.

Overall the staff make this place, from the helpful and friendly doorman to the wonderful concierge and everyone in between! The concierge was just brilliant, her knowledge on the city was spot on and she was incredibly helpful in booking restaurants. The Argonaut also offers free bikes to its guests, a must especially in this location!

If I had a niggle, it would be breakfast, staff friendly but not as "on the ball" as the rest and I honestly think the menu needs more choice and perhaps pricing could be re-assessed as I thought it expensive.

Previously I reviewed the Hotel Drisco as my definite number 1 choice in SF and I have to say The Argonaut is definitely up there now side by side with the Drisco for me! The Argonaut was fantastic and I will definitely be back!

Room Tip: Try for an outside room, I had an internal facing room and felt I needed to keep the blinds closed a...

Hi, Alan O,
I'm glad you loved the energy and fun of our boutique hotel! An escape from the financial district and the "big boxes" indeed :).
We'll share your feedback with the restaurant managers and also give a big "high five" to those hardworking housekeeping ladies and concierge. Thanks for taking the time to praise their skills!
We'll look forward to seeing you come aboard again!

This hotel was a very pleasant surprise right from the affable doorman to the spacious and comfortable rooms. The afternoon wine hour in the lobby is a great way to meet fellow travellers. The hotel is in a very handy location and is highly recommended.

Thanks, Bermibound! I loved meeting so many Australians and Kiwis here over the last few months of racing for the Americas Cup. I'm glad you also liked meeting folks at the nightly wine party. If you head back this way, I hope you can also stop into the restaurant for some of their famous crab and corn chowder. That is a "must." As you mention, there are several convenient local attractions nearby, including our very own Maritime Museum run in concern with the National Park Service (our land lords :)).

We spent 4 nights at the argonaut as part of our family moon. Thank you for the sparkling wine and card that was left in our room. We had 2 connecting rooms for us and our 3 children with fabulous views of Alcatraz and the bridge peeking out from the fog. The rooms were very clean, a lovely nautical theme and very comfortable. It was the friendliest hotel welcome of our 17 night trip. The children loved delving into the pirates treasure chest. We nearly didn't book this hotel as had read previous trip advisor reviews describing the happy hour as being rowdy. We found this to be a delightful very civilized affair. We made a point of getting back to the hotel each day for this very happy hour! An hour spent chatting about the day we'd just had in this fabulous city, sipping delicious complimentary wine while our children did the treasure hunt the staff organised was close to perfection! This hotel is outstanding for it's excellent location, fabulous views, friendly staff and jolly happy hour! I would come back to San Francisco, just so I could revisit this hotel!

Well, those smiles are definitely a reward to us, so thanks for sharing, Caroline! I'm so glad that you were also a fan of the nightly wine party. It is a great chance to unwind and share city tips with other visitors and with our crew. On those rare occasions that it gets quite busy, we do try to free up space in our restaurant, where you can purchase some happy hour nibbles while enjoying the lobby wine! The crab and corn chowder is the hands-down favorite, but the calamari is quite addictive as well...
