“Loved our stay”
Reviewed April 20, 2013

First rate throughout. Steve the lively afternoon doorman/greeter set the stage. Great staff and service. Afternoon beer/wine reception in the beautiful lobby. An excellent transformation of an old cannery, with vintage wood beams throughout. Spacious, well appointed rooms--we got a harbor view room with views out onto Fisherman's wharf. Very conveniently located to Marina, Fisherman's Wharf and Embarcadero. Cable cars to downtown a few steps away. Blue Mermaid restaurant in hotel served a nice breakfast. Would stay here again.

Thanks so much, Joseph! Our doorman Steve is quite a riot, isn't he? His vibrant personality is what we're all about here. A sense of fun and liveliness to break up the hum-drum-"beige" of your typical hotel chain! We'll share your kudos with him!

Our party of 5 spent 5 nights here and loved it. Good service, great rooms and cleaning and the 5 - 6 pm serving of wine and beer was an added bonus. Breakfast was continental but could be topped up for a few dollars. Walls were rather thin and we could hear telephone conversations, hairdryers etc now and then. Free wi fi and so handy for all destinations including Alcatraz, the tram car inot the town and all the piers.

Room Tip: Away from the front on Jefferson Street as lots of long term road works when we there in April 2013.

Hi, there, Leighites. I'm glad the five of you had such a great week here at the Argonaut, and found the hotel to be a convenient home base. We'll let those hardworking room attendants know how well they cleaned your room and how they helped contribute to the great, comfy atmosphere you detailed here. One thing I should note for the readers at home: the wine reception is complimentary to all guests, but the continental breakfast vouchers do come just with certain booking packages. That said, our restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and room service daily, so you certainly won't go hungry. Especially if you have even a cup of that crab-filled chowder :)!

We arrived while road construction was happening right in front of the hotel. The staff easily overcame the many challenges they faced due to the construction. From the doormen and the bellmen, the valets to the reception staff the guest is met with friendly efficiency the first moment of your arrival. The restaurant staff provides professional but friendly service and are quick to please. The rooms have somewhat thin walls but are kept spotless and well appointed. Even with construction outside outside sounds never made to our room. Like the rest of the staff the maids are courteous and very helpful. I would come back to this hotel if for no other reason than the staff. Oh, did I mention, the wine (or beer) reception every night at five. A wonderful way to meet fellow travellers.

Room Tip: Even numbers face outward, odd the courtyard.

Thank you, Fred -- your comments will mean the world to our staff, especially the doormen and bellmen who have been putting their all into ensuring guests feel welcome after making it around that bend of construction. I'm glad to read once again that the thick walls and modern windows did the trick to keep any road noise OUT! Cheers and thanks again for recognizing the crew here.

Second time at the Argonaut and was great to come back for a couple of days. Friendly staff make you feel very welcome. There are cheaper options in the Wharf area but its worth a bit more to stay here in a friendly, vibey and convenient location.

Thanks so much, Denzel B! The best review we can hope for is a repeat guest, and particularly so when they hail across the globe -- cool! Thanks so much for chosing us (even if we are the only boutique hotel at the Wharf, perhaps an unfair advantage :)). I'll let the team know they made you feel like you were returning home!

An ex-cannery building that has been converted into a top class hotel, we loved the Argonaut. From being greeted by the bell hop in his pith helmet to the welcoming and friendly reception staff, the hotel set a good impression. With good big rooms, plenty of storage, free wi-fi, big HDTV, comfy beds, and so on it was an excellent base for us in San Francisco.
We also received vouchers for a continental breakfast every morning in the hotel restaurant, and we found it enough to kick-start the day - especially with so much seafood out there to go at later in the day.
Every evening between 5 and 6 there were free drinks in the lobby - and this meant one or two reaaly decent sized glasses of wine, or a beer as a pre-dinner ritual really. We noticed that this was not necessarily limited to hotel partons, and a few people appear to have wandered in off the street, grabbed a couple of drinks, charged up their mobile devices and just chilled out for an hour.
Roughly a 15 minute stroll (or 10 minute walk) away from Pier 39 which is where a lot of the tourists and locals go for food, watch the seals and generally enjoy the feel of the place. Also if you left the hotel and went left you are straight in Giardelli park, which is another place to just wander across the grass, grab a bench and look out over the bay.
We ate in a few of the seafood restaurants down between the hotel and Pier 39. In every case the food was just superb, and sitting there in a decent restaurant with a seafood platter, a glass of Zinfandel, looking across to the Golden gate Bridge as the sun sets...well it jus doesn't get any better.

Thank you, gutbucket! I'm thrilled you were "impressed" by our hotel and the experience here!
I see we got to load you up on seafood here at the waterfront and you had a chance to stroll around and enjoy the views of the bridge. Did you get a chance to try out the Blue Mermaid here at the hotel? The chowder is the hit of the city, but in crab season you might want to just go for it and tear one of those little buggers apart!

This place is awesome, it is not your typical hotel. It's more on the Out there. The location is great and I will never again stay in the main part of San Fran and will now head to Fishermans Wharf every time. The location means easy cable car or muni to the city and easy access to the baseball stadium. The gym is well equipped and the service is sensational.. love the rooms, the beds and everything about this place..Will return here everytime we visit this wonderful city.. Love Love Love

Room Tip: Hopefully you will get the most awesoe view of the bridges.

Aw, shucks, Lion1 - we love love love you right back! I appreciate your sweet review, and am delighted you're a "convert" to our waterfront area. There is a reason that San Francisco is known for the wharf, and there's nothing like strolling to the aquatic park next door and breathing in the salt air while you take in the expanse of the bridge...

This was our first trip to San Francisco and this hotel was a perfect choice. There were road works going on just outside but this didn't cause us any problems. We did think it might be noisy but we weren't bothered by any noise. The location was great only a few minutes walk from the water front, where you could find plenty going on.
The staff were very friendly and helpful, the rooms were clean and comfortable with everything you needed, we even had a iPod dock.
We eat breakfast in the blue mermaid, we had good service and nice food, we did find that the bar in the blue mermaid closed at 9pm which seemed a little early . It would have been nice to have a drink in the lounge when returning from a evening out. But it wasn't a major problem . We didn't make the free wine tasting as we were out a lot.
Would love to stay her again if we revisited San Francisco.

Well, I guess we'll settle for perfect :). Thanks so much, Christine! I'm glad you'll be back. We'll switch to our summer hours in the restaurant soon, and we hope ours will be THE place for outdoor dining all summer long now that we have huge outdoor heaters and so much deck furniture! I'm glad you enjoyed a tasty breakfast there and everything was quiet and comfortable with your room. We'll look forward to your return - cheers!
