Me and my girlfriend went with this hostel because of its excellent location and it had private rooms with private bathrooms. I can't comment on how well the shared rooms were but if you're looking for a cheap (compared to the downtown hotels) private option that is clean, you can't go wrong. The bathroom looked newly renovated and clean and the bed was pretty comfortable. Towels were included which a lot of hostels don't have. I do agree it was a little loud but the earplugs solved that and I slept pretty well. Breakfast was basic but it's free so you can't complain (bagels, oatmeal and fruit).

We did the bike ride activity on Monday around the city. It was cheaper compared to the Streets of SF tours and you got to go across the Golden Gate bridge into Sausilito. The guide seemed new so there wasn't much history and talking but you do see the sites.

Overall, a good way to save money in pricey downtown San Fran. It is near the Tenderloin district but we didn't have any problems, even at night.

I loved this hostel. The people who worked there were so accommodating and friendly. I met some great people and loved the location. The room my friend and I had was one with a bunk bed, some lockers, a window, and a sink. I was not expecting it to be so nice. My favorite hostel I have stayed in so far. Every morning I loved coming downstairs and chit chatting with the wonderful staff. It was quite and clean. We extended our stay for 2 more nights because we were having such a nice time.

My wife and I stayed here in April. We had a private room with shared bath and shower. This is only $10 more than if two people were to book their own dorm beds.

It is a wonderful budget place to stay. It is a old building and being right downtown it can be noisy. They do offer free ear plugs, and really noise is to be expected downtown.

The room was basic and clean and had a bunk bed with a double below and single up top. Great flexibility for two friends or a couple to sleep comfortably. There is a sink and mirror in the room which for the ladies is a big deal. There is also two lockers in the room. As with most hostels, bring your own lock.

Parking anywhere in San Francisco is horrendously expensive but the staff tip you off to a decent garage that is $25/day and is staffed 24 hours. It is on the edge of the tenderloin which is not a neighborhood you want to be walking around alone at night in, but hey, it is $10-15 cheaper to park than the garage right across the street.

We have stayed at the HI Fisherman's Wharf hostel and the free parking there is a definite perk!

The common areas of the hostel were spacious and well kept. The staff are great, one girl is a definite air head but the other girls and dudes were very knowledgeable and helpful with what to do around town.

This is a good budget option for downtown, but don't think you're getting anything special.
We didn't take part in any of the activities, but they seemed popular and well organised.

The staff - Becky was wonderful and helpful and even when oddities walked in off the street to cause a bit of a ruckus she was always calm and polite. I don't know the name of the ginger guy on the desk but he clearly has an attitude problem. If you see him, try and talk to someone else, the chap really looks down his nose at people.

All in all, it was a fine stay, but you WILL need to use the earplugs provided.

Great location and excellent price for our room. It is the basics and clean! That was what we were looking for on a low budget trip we took to San Francisco recently. The staff was friendly. They have a large kitchen area with storage so you can make your meals. The movie theater has great seating. The lounge was cozy. They recycle!

Room Tip: a room with a window in the back of the hotel might be quieter. The rooms facing downtown street Ma...

I think the best thing about the hostel was all the activities offered. We did a free walking tour to chinatown/north beach which was exellent! The shared areas of the hostel were also quite good.

However, we stayed in a private room and it could have been nicer. It was impossible to sleep without good earplugs and it was way too hot! Needless to say, we didnt sleep wery well.. . But if you want to stay in the middle of the busy city center I guess the location is perfect. Its also safe (but dont walk towards the dodgy tenderloin area).

The location is great. A couple blocks south and you end up in a pretty sketchy neighbourhood, but there's nothing sketchy about this location. You are one block from Union Square, a popular meeting spot and with lots of high-end shopping. The hostel is also part of a cluster of hotels, so the streets are naturally safe. There are some good restaurants and 24hr diners on the same street as well.

The building is 100 years old (but what isn't in downtown SF). Inside however the furniture is modern, the floors and facilities are clean. The kitchen is brand new. There is a "hang out" room with lots of couches. The only downside were the oldschool windows that did very little to block out noise from street level. I was on the 3rd floor and it was pretty noisy up until at least midnight. It didn't keep me up, but it was not unnoticeable. There are a few clubs and pubs near by. I'd stay here again and would recommend it. I have stayed at far worse for more money. This is great value.
