Me and my girlfriend went with this hostel because of its excellent location and it had private rooms with private bathrooms. I can't comment on how well the shared rooms were but if you're looking for a cheap (compared to the downtown hotels) private option that is clean, you can't go wrong. The bathroom looked newly renovated and clean and the bed was pretty comfortable. Towels were included which a lot of hostels don't have. I do agree it was a little loud but the earplugs solved that and I slept pretty well. Breakfast was basic but it's free so you can't complain (bagels, oatmeal and fruit).
We did the bike ride activity on Monday around the city. It was cheaper compared to the Streets of SF tours and you got to go across the Golden Gate bridge into Sausilito. The guide seemed new so there wasn't much history and talking but you do see the sites.
Overall, a good way to save money in pricey downtown San Fran. It is near the Tenderloin district but we didn't have any problems, even at night.
