“a slightly more class conscious hostel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2013

like most HI hostels it is very (for lack of better words) non-offensive and politically correct, though lacking in atmosphere. Due to this is caters for all ages and families but does not make it a 'worldly travelers hostel'. They have great activities that run everyday and if you use these you will meet cool people.

Very clean, nice rooms for the price and awesome location, though i did find the staff to be particularly unhelpful and somewhat rude.

DO NOT use the parking lot directly opposite, i got double charged and car was broken into. if you have your own car there is parking lots all around! do yourselves a big favor and make the effort to go for a sunrise or sunset over the GGBridge. Simply amazing!

Booked a double room with a friend and was put in a room with a double bed and a single bunk of top, the room could have fit 3 people. The hotel did have a distinct smell, but it wasn't a bad smell more like a very strong detergent. Room had a basin and mirror which was great cause you didn't have to head to the bathroom every night and morning to brush your teeth and wash face. The toilet and shower were okay. The people who stayed at the hotel seemed cool and friendly lots of activities and tours that you can do organised by the hostel (although we didn't do any).

The main plus is definitely the location. Restaurants and places on the same street and it was about a 5 minute walk to the 'happening' area of Union square, Market and Powell streets. Great value for money.

We stayed 2 nights in this hostel. The staff was really good and helpfull, the private room wa had was nice and clean. Just too warm during the night because of an old heater system... Quiet and clean common areas. Good breakfast with nice choice of beggels/jam/juices and coffee. Perfect to stay and enjoy the city!

The location is fantastic, just a few blocks to Market Street and Union Square (where loads of public transport go from and the shops are located). Lots of places to eat around here.

The room was clean and safe. The bathroom was clean and had a good shower. I stayed on the street side of the hostel, and if you are a light sleeper this could be a problem for you as there is car noises, rubbish removal noises through the night. You could use earplugs or ask for a room away from the street.

The free breakfast is great. The services here, laundry room, internet etc are great. They hold events most nights; pub crawl, movie night, etc. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is not on the street if you are a light sleeper. They assign beds, so you could...

Location is great. The front desk workers were slow & seemed to be lacking training with the computer system. The elevator also was not working about 60% of the time. Being on the top floor trying to lug bags down was no fun. We did do a pub crawl with Jessie one night, which was a good time!
Oh and just a FYI- this is in the city so there is alot of night noise. Ear plugs recommended if you are a light sleeper.

The best hostel I've ever stayed in! It has free wifi, great kitchen facilities, the dorm rooms are good (I stayed in an all girl dorm which had its own bathroom which was awesome!) breakfast was good. The location is great, just off union square. There are a lot of homeless people around this area, but they were all harmless. I loved it!!,

Room Tip: All girl if you are a girl - has its own bathroom

I stayed here while attending a conference. It was in the perfect location for the conference, and was also a short walk to most places I went to. The street noise was only mildly noticeable on Saturday night and the front desk does have free ear plugs if you need (I didn't). I had a private room with shower on the second floor. The trick to using the shower is not to turn it on the whole way - which results in a cold shower. Turn it on half way for a nice hot shower! Free Bagles for Breakfast and organic coffee. The staff were smiley, friendly and helpful. Other travellers were respectful of your peace and quiet and there was more of a mature demographic staying at the hostel.
Note: If you are looking for a place to pick up some groceries, there is a Target on the corner of Mission St and 4th, and a Wholefoods a bit further down on Harrison St and 4th. Both in easy walking distance.
