We went with a volunteer group and did not have any negative experiences. We didn't spend much time in the hostel anyway since there was so much to do in San Francisco! The free breakfast is bagels, juice, and coffee. It felt pretty safe and clean! They have free wifi but you have to pay to use their computers if you do not bring your own.
