Of all of the big-name SF coffee shops, this was our least favorite. Staff were a bit too smug, and the drip and iced coffees were stale. The lattes were put together well, so grab one of those if you find yourself in Four Barrel

As a visiting Brit I make a point of coming to four barrels when I'm in San Francisco. The coffee is consistently excellent and beats most of the places in the UK easily. Their pastries aren't too large or sweet as is often the case in the US.

I like the way they roast on site but (unfortunately) you can't really smell it as the exhaust is passed through some kind of after burner else apparently the whole neighbourhood would stink!

Can be too busy at the weekends. There is a (public) seating area outside on the street.
No wifi.

On our quest for great coffee we visited Four Barrel and were very satisfied. This coffee shop not only served excellent coffee, but had a variety of quality baked goods to choose from. This was a good choice for a quick breakfast before exploring the city. The atmosphere is relaxed with good service.

Hands down, Four Barrel coffee is the best single brewed cup of coffee you will get in San Francisco. Excellent staff who display a passion for brewing the best cup of coffee each and every time.

They just opened a new location at 736 Divisadero under the name "The Mill." It is a collaborative effort between Four Barrel and Josey Baker (a local baker). The new location is currently being remodeled, but the current digs are worth checking out (white tent within a gutted old building...very cool!).
