All courses used familiar and unfamiliar ingredients in a special way. Good service before theater. Still tasting the good things they served.

Love how the menu and decor changes seasonally. I try to get back here with each change of the menu. The cocktails are also very good, and they have a buy one bring one free corkage policy, which is perfect for going with friends.

“The Minimalist Banquet”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 19, 2013

What a place to make an impression on a first date! AQ is located on Mission and 7th Street, an area of San Francisco that used to be frequented by the down and out. As a matter of fact, the Greyhound station used to be just around the corner but things are a changing in this beautiful city where dining options abound. Upon entering, one is greeted by two very personalable host one of whom will lead you to your table if you have reservations. Once seated, a waiter will come and recite the featured dish not listed on the menu plus the different options listed on the printed menu. The tasting menu consists of about five items selected by the chef with a wine pairing option added for good measure. Once the choice is made, the dishes start arriving one at a time with good interval between plate changes and the next dish for a good conversation. On each dish one will fine miniscule portions of seasonal vegetables and/or meat arranged for asthetics that is reminscent of Japanese kaiseki but somehow one gets the feeling that plating small portions on a large platter defines the difference between AQ and a kaiseki dinner where each dish is served on a vessel proportionate to quantity of food. Overall, it's a fine dining experience with impeccable service for special occasions but a place to skip if you have an appetite and want a hearty meal.

“Great seasonal food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2013

What makes this restaurant interesting (other than the delicious food) is their seasonal take on the menu. My friend and I made it to the restaurant during their Fall period. Not only does the menu reflect the designated season, but so does the decor.

We decided to not order an entree and stuck with their appetizers. The staff recommends you choose two from the left side of the menu (appetizers at $10 and $16) and one entree. The right side of the menu is the entree offerings and they range from $16-36. It was a good thing we didn't order the entree because even though the appetizers are small, they are filling - especially the pork belly. I had the aforementioned pork belly with chokecherry reduction, shaved dried mushrooms with cabbage rolled in cabbage. It was delicious. My second appetizer choice was persimmon cubes with duck bacon and herbs. The taste combination was really unique. The staff smartly brought out the persimmon- duck first and later the more filling pork belly. My only regret was not having enough room to have an entree and dessert. I'll happily return for those choices the next time.
