“Hidden gem, great hotel!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2010

I travel to SF a lot for work and have never stayed at this hotel or even heard of it. I was recently in a wedding that was at the Marines Memorial Club Hotel so we stayed there with the rest of the wedding party.

PROS: Location is perfect, right in Union Square. Quiet and cozy rooms. Amazing FREE brunch for all guests. Restaurant is on the top of the building with spectacular views and even better food. This was a nice surprise; we had brunch there every morning!

CONS: It's just as expensive as the nicer hotels in SF. No bell man to help hail cabs, etc.

The Marine Memorial Club Hotel is my sanctuary and sanity station in the city of San Francisco.

From the moment you walk through the door, you feel as though you are instantly welcome and respected.

Of course, part of this comes from the fact that it is military-oriented, so those of us who are veterans feel at home. The staff is always cheerful and supportive of your needs, and by your second day, most of the staff recognizes and remembers you.

The facility, located one block of the Union Square area at the corner of Sutter and Mason, is a Beau Arts style building that has been lovingly restored and updated over the years by the Marine Memorial Association, and, as the name implies, it is actually a Memorial.

The lobby is nice with various displays in cases along the walls. A businees center is located on the fourth floor, where various suites are located. A wonderful library and two banquet rooms are located on floor 11 and the Leatherneck lounge / restaurant is on floor 12 (with wonderful views of the city).

The rooms are very comfortable with ductless air conditioning and an overhead fan, so temperatures can be adjusted easily. The rooms are tastefully decorated. A small refrigerator, coffee maker, safe, iron and ironing boad are present. A comfortable desk is there and an excellent wireless internet connection is available.

The staff is wonderful. Many have worked there for years. When is the last time your housekeeper recognized you, said good morning and wished you a good day when you left your room each day? Our breakfast waiters knew who we were and knew our preferances for breakfast drinks.

A free full breakfast buffet is provided each morning -- if you can't find something to eat, something is wrong with you. Lunch and dinner is available and the dinner menu is great. A free social hour is provided daily.

Access to a health club is available.

In short, this is a wonderful place to stay and highly recommended.

Stayed at the hotel for a couple of nights. Great location, beautiful historic hotel, museum like exhibits. Awe-inspiring. Staff worked hard to make stay memorable and were extremely helpful hailing cabs, make dinner suggestions and assisting with directions in the city. Great complimentary full buffet American breakfast as well as complimentary happy hour. As active duty member will continue to be a member, not only for the great value of staying here, but for the awesome job they are doing representing the Marines and other military branches.

We stayed four nights in a king room on the fifth floor facing Sutter Street. The rate includes a lot of things that are 'extras' elsewhere such as breakfast, internet, safe, gym, cocktails, snacks......

It is in a great location close to a lot of attractions. So, for a downtown hotel it is very good value. We booked online with the hotel site and the rate was reasonable but not the 'club' rate.

The staff are good and helpful. We did have one slack breakfast server though...

The hotel definitely has an 'ambience' that is unique and the military history is everywhere.

There are some things to mention though.... our room had a big crack in the basin and a big stain on the carpet, it was getting a bit worn and the bedding was pretty ordinary compared to other comparable hotels we have stayed in this trip. It was also stuffy as there is no extraction system but this goes with older hotel buildings.

This hotel seems to have a regular following and on balance we can see why as it provides a 'different' experience to your usual vanilla hotel!

Good luck and enjoy...

After many attempts to stay at the Marine Memorial, we finally had the pleasure. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the hotel and staff. The full American style buffet breakfast was delicious and filling. An added bonus was the unlimited supply of fresh squeezed orange juice. The highlight was happy hour on the 12th floor while listening to live piano music and he is extremely talented. Our four year old daughter did a dance performance while he played the theme to Lion King.
We brought our dog and the staff could not have been more helpful providing a food bowl and offered a bed.
We are already planning our next trip. Fyi, plan in advance, it is a very popular hotel...and now I know why.

My only disappointment is that we only had a one night stay at this great hotel in downtown SF. I didn't learn about this place until recently by another friend in the Navy who strongly recommended this for military people and their families and wow what a place. This Hotel not only a great place to stay but also has lots of history with it as well. It is a "living memorial" for all those who have served in the military around the world. So all in all just a one night stay but would love to be here for a week to explore San Francisco. There are no negatives for this review here are all the positives:

- Location: in the heart of downtown San Francisco located within walking distance to all the sights downtown.
-Free complimentary internet/ free gym pass at the attached gym with lap pool. Complimentary happy hour with free drinks and breakfast ( which we did not get to try).
-Business center.
-Comfortable rooms with flat screen TV/ refrigerator/comfortable bed/ nice bathroom with great water pressure.
-11th floor has a historic library with array of different military books and newspapers.

We will be back! Can recommend this place enough.

Tip on eatiing
We had Sushi at the Sanraku restaurant just up the street on Summit from the hotel. Great Sushi and service!

Tip on Hertz rental car: avoid if you can the 550 OFarrell Hertz rental car. Terrible service! Avoid if you can given the headache of dealing with this place.

This is my second stay at this property. Rates are great and even better if you are in the Armed Forces. The fact that I am a Reserve Officer, in the Canadian Forces, makes no difference to them - I am given the same rates as an American service member.

What makes this place so wonderful - the staff. Attentive, genuinely concerned about the well being of the guests and very helpful.

One of the best breakfasts that I have had in a North American hotel. Happy hour is a great way to end the work day and the opportunity is there to interact with other guests if one is so inclined.

The library is awesome and a place to relax. A well equipped public gym in the basement.

I'll be back!!!
