“Lovely hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

Location, location, location! Such a great hotel (and museum!) right in the heart of Union Square. We recently had a wonderful 6 night stay at this hotel. We paid the extra for a corner king room after reading reviews on TA stating it was a larger room with more light. We were not disappointed as we had great views of the city from the 5th floor and lots of natural light. The room was clean and the king bed was very comfortable. We enjoyed a full hot breakfast buffet each morning (included) and attended the cocktail hour a couple of times (free beer, mixed drinks, wine). The front desk staff were always friendly and helpful. Business center is large and has 4 computers with printer. We did so much walking in the city that we didn't use the fitness center although there is one on site. We were also grateful for the free self- serve laundry on the 4th and 6th floors (free detergent at the front desk). We became members due to staying for so many nights that it made it worth the cost of the membership to get the discounted rate. The only negative is outside noise at night so we recommend you bring ear plugs. When the bars close we could hear people being loud and then around 5:00 -6:00 am each morning the trash trucks came through. It wouldn't stop me from staying here again though. Highly recommend a stay here.

Given San Francisco hotel rates, you can easily save a three-digit sum every night by staying at this comfortable hotel near Union Square. We recently paid $179 a night for one of the best rooms in the house -- including breakfast. Other rooms were even cheaper.

Despite the club's name, any U.S. military service, no matter how long ago, seems to qualify you for membership. I joined based on Army service years earlier and later upgraded to a lifetime membership. Over the years, this has saved us thousands of dollars. You can get a good rate as the guest of a member too. If you have no military connection at all, the hotel may still be worth a try. In this case, the best approach is to try reserving online, a front desk clerk suggested. You'll have a lower priority in busy periods and you will pay more than members pay. But it may still be a good deal. The club also has reciprocal arrangements with similar clubs in the U.S. and abroad, which could save money as well.

The more expensive rooms are much larger and brighter than the others and are probably the best value. The rooms aren't stylish -- and heaven forbid, certainly not "effete" -- but they are comfortable. The bedding is good quality.

The only real negative here is street noise. Many rooms overlook busy streets. San Francisco can be a party town, and on weekend nights especially, you may find yourself "overhearing" more fun than you want (especially, it seems, when the bars close). In rooms facing the back, you may hear the garbage trucks in the alley early in the morning. We find it helps a lot to request a high floor room and at all costs try to avoid rooms that face the alley. (The high-floor rooms often have excellent city views too.) If street noise really bothers you, bring ear plugs and think about how much the Fairmont would cost you.

The free breakfast buffet is pretty run-of-the-mill (and the coffee this last visit as awful). But it is served in a 12th floor room that has a superb view of the city and bay. Service is very friendly and competent -- as it is throughout the hotel.

The overall atmosphere here isn't particularly military. There is a fair amount of Marine memorabilia in the public areas, some of it very interesting and even inspiring. But two men or two women checking in together will probably feel completely comfortable. We're talking San Francisco Marines here.

Despite the Marine Corps connection, there are no mandatory push-ups before breakfast here. But if you're really feeling nostalgic for military training, you can always charge up Nob Hill, just outside the front door. That will help you realize that you are no longer a young recruit.

Room Tip: To minimize street noise, ask for a high floor and avoid rooms overlooking that awful alley.

I really enjoyed reading your review and thank you for the support and kind words. Hotel guests also enjoy full use of Club One Fitness... lower level, (In case you don't want to charge up Nob Hill!) The fitness center is a full floor of equipment, pilates studio, large lap pool, exercise classroom and spa services. Again... thanks for the review!

As a member it is still difficult to get a room at the hotel but well worth the time and effort to secure a room. The beds are fantastic and food is worth dressing up for. I travel with my daughter and she hates that there is a dress code for breakfast but it has become somewhat fun to make the effort to meet dress attire with her. The location can not be any better. ! block from the cable cars which take you to all points of the city.

Room Tip: I have stayed a number of times and have not had to make any suggestions to get what I need. It is...

We stayed here for our wedding weekend and were blown away by this hotel for the location, amenities, and price. Staff is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful and rooms are ALWAYS clean. There is also and pool and gym, and we used street parking which is free at night and all day Sundays. The breakfast that is included with the room is of very good quality and goes far beyond the typical dry, tasteless muffins and bad coffee contintental breakfasts that I've had at hotels of comparable price. There were plenty of hot and cold selections for vegetarians, and carnivores alike. There is plenty of shopping and restaurants surrounding the hotel, as well as plenty of public transportation right at the door-step, and the train is just a couple blocks away. It was close to City Hall, making it so convenient for our marriage process, and to coordinate and meet with our wedding officant too (If planning to be married in SFO, you may want to check him out in other review he was GREAT - Irv Spivak, Celebrant, Milestones & Memories). Anyway, as Military folk we love coming here, especially with the generous discount they offer and will definitely be back!

Room Tip: All the rooms are comparable in quality and location.

An excellent, but older hotel from the a golden age of entertainment. The stars that used to do their shows from there: Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, etc. It has an understated elegance, great service, great location. Its a very special hotel with military artifacts from the beginning of our country throu each war that will humble you.

Room Tip: My room viewed a brick wall but was quiet. I'm sure there are other fantastic rooms with views b...

Superb location. Close to shopping, Chinatown, restaurants, theatre and just about everything else. Staff is friendly and helpful. Best room price in San Francisco. Complimentary excellent full breakfast. Happy Hour drinks. Beautiful tributes to our heroes. Has the old San Francisco charm! Very well kept up. Do not hear your neighbors.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the street hear the street noise

Great location and hotel staff is very nice. The room was very clean and the views from the restaurant up top are great- you can see the whole city!

Only negative- It can get a little noisy especially if your room faces the alley with dumpsters.
