I lived in San Francisco for five years before moving to Southern CA, so I can tell you, as a local expert, that the SW is in an absolutely perfect location for anyone wanting to explore the city by foot. Its central location provides the very best possible access to China Town (it's located right at the northern edge), an easy walk to North Beach, Coit Tower, Columbus Street, Jackson Square and the financial district / Embarcadero, and also OK walking distance (for those who like to walk) to Fisherman's wharf to the north, South of Market to the south, and even up over the hill (for the really ambitious) to the Russian Hill / Polk Street area. I just stayed at the SW for work by default (based on the other major hotels being booked), but following a very pleasant evening walk / light dinner on Columbus Ave, followed by an obligatory late-night plate of Chow Mein noodles, and the good room rate vs. the major hotels, I think the SW might now be my new hotel of choice for my future visits to the City.

Room Tip: Based on other reviews, I requested, and was given, an interior room to avoid street noise.

We stayed for several nights in September. Our room was clean. Our bed was comfortable. Staff were friendly. The breakfast was a nice perk. We requested a quiet room after reading other reviews about the thin walls. We were put far from the elevators. Noise was not a problem for us.

My one complaint was our television was very small and oriented in such a way that we really couldn't view it from our bed.

This is a great place if you're not planning on spending a lot of time in your hotel room.

Great stay. Very close to North Beach and China Town. Close to lots of public transportation and great restaurants. The only thing I can suggest is they needs to upgrade there keys to key cards come on its not 1980.

Good price for San Francisco. Easy access for sightseeing. Right between Chinatown and North Beach. Room was clean and comfy. Nothing spectacular but had all the basic comforts you need. Staff is very polite, friendly and helpful. There is a breakfast but don't expect much. It's dry cereal, breakfast carbs, juice and coffee. If you want a good breakfast, walk to Mama's on Washington Square. All in all, a good deal.

Overall our stay was great. Staff provided excellent setvice and were friendly. There was a basic continental breakfast (cereal, juice, coffee, bread). Rooms were somwhat basic but the beds were very comfortable (firm). Everything was clean. Our notable dissatisfaction was due to the noises that travelled between rooms. We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights, and on 2 of those nights our sleep was interrupted by noise/arguments and "activities" in the next room. Otherwise, for the price, this was a lovely hotel.

A good choice. SW hotel is right in the heart of Chinatown, with all its hustle and bustle during the day and quiet but safe streets at night. Close to Little Italy and Nob Hill, and also walkable to downtown too. We paid $159 plus tax for a double ensuite room on the third floor.

The check in was instant and friendly, though the man on reception didn't tell us that breakfast was included (which we only discovered the following morning). Spacious grand lobby with beautiful Chinese art and antiques.

Everything was clean, though there were a few stray hairs in the bathroom but nothing to bother about, especially as we met the housekeeping staff each morning and they were lovely.

Pros:
- excellent location
- we had a room at the back of the hotel overlooking a wall, which though not scenic, kept the noise from the street away.
- free and fast wifi
- comfortable Queen sized bed, a/c (not that you need it in SF), bathroom toiletries and hairdryer and iron and fridge included; old style big tv in the wardrobe, but it worked fine
- friendly staff

Maybes:
- we were pleased to find out there was a breakfast included, and it was available from 7am to 10am in the lobby to the conference rooms. The walls have displays of photos and newspaper cuttings about the original owner, Sam Wong, which was interesting. Breakfast was everything there we needed (juice, tea and coffee, cereal, make your own toast, croissants, hard boiled eggs, panettone type bread), but it was 'value' range and on paper plates and plastic cutlery. Some might expect more at this (usual SF) high price.
- some odd omissions from the room (again at this price you might expect them), e.g. nowhere to hang clothes, either from a door hook or a wardrobe. The wardrobe had the tv and fridge in it, and there was a tiny thin cupboard with the ironing board in it.
- interior walls were paper thin. On the first evening the adjoining room had a child and we could hear everything (crying etc). The next few nights were fine, but it was still noisy from the icemachine outside in the corridor.
- just some other little things like the blanket on the bed (an SF necessity) was a bit institutional looking.

We have stayed at the SW several times and enjoy it immensely. Walk out the door and your in Chinatown, cross the street and your in North Beach. The staff is attentive and the rooms s are wonderful. . The place is clean with beautiful appointments. It is always part of the SF experience for us.

Room Tip: We prefer the top floor.
