We stayed at the Da Vinci as part of a travel package. It was referred to as a 'boutique hotel'. Harruuuumph. It appears to be a poorly remodeled apartment complex from the 50s or 60s. The rooms are small. The lighting is miserable. The 'free wifi' is a bad joke. In 4 days, I've managed to log on one time. The shower is pitiful. The noise from the street has awakened me every night even though we're on the fourth floor. Oh, and there's noise in the hallway most nights. Will not be returning.

The hotel is located near many shops and restaurants which is important to us. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was a good size and the beds were comfortable. The room was pretty clean. I would definitely return as long as the rates are reasonable.

As many of the reviews have said ... it was a nice and clean hotel that has been updated nicely and the included breakfast while not impressive, it was definitely appreciated. The hotel manager that checked us in at 10pm at night was seen walking the hotel inside and out making sure everything was good the following morning ... at night there was also a security guard roaming around, but was probably not necessary.

The hotel, although very close to Fisherman's Wharf and busy bus stops, it was on Van Ness which is a very busy street and even on the 4th floor around the side the street noise was ridiculous ... and not that anything can be done about it, but the fog horns the first night were also very loud and hard to sleep through.

If you can request a room up top and far in the back you may get a better night sleep.

Room Tip: away from Van Ness ...

Stayed here after booking on Expedia for 2 days in early November. Bed was very comfortable after a long flight and always my main priority. Convenient to Fort Mason Park, lovely for walking and the views. On a bus line that can get to you downtown. One block from a lot of restaurants on Polk street. Staff was considerate and helpful. Got us into our room early and were always available to help us. True the exterior is deceiving. Actually a refurbished motel behind the lobby. Not a four star but good quality for the price.

Getting There: For cheap/easy transport, check out San Francisco City Shuttle. It was only $22 each way for both of us ($11 each). It’s a shuttle so you will have to drop people off/pick people up, etc., but for that price it’s worth it.

Location: Great. An easy walk to Fisherman’s Wharf. You can also walk to restaurants and bars on Polk, to North Beach, Lombard, etc. Just keep in mind that some of these routes involve steep hills! Several buses run along Van Ness and there’s a bus stop about two minutes away.

Room: Decent room, but no frills. Good hot shower. My only real complaint was there was only a mirror in the bathroom – nothing in the room itself – so I couldn’t do my hair and makeup while my husband showered. Oh and it is really loud at night/in the morning when you’re trying to sleep with cars whizzing by, the foghorn blaring, etc. Also, they have a strange light system. You can only turn on the lights by first turning on the fan.

Breakfast: Good. Bagels, bread, pastries, cereal, fruit, coffee, tea. Enough to get you going in the morning. Great staff.

Getting Around: We used the Muni bus system a lot. It’s $2 per ride (make sure you bring lots of dollar bills because they don’t give change). You get a transfer when you board that’s good for anywhere from 1.5-3 hours in any direction. It also includes the historic streetcars. They have day passes as well but they seemed pricey and not worth it. Better to just pay as you go.

In summary, this is a decent hotel for the price. If you're looking for luxury, look elsewhere. If you just need a clean place to sleep at night in a great location, this hotel is for you.
