My boyfriend and I stayed here for 2 nights and enjoyed our stay. The location was great, pretty central to downtown activity and close to transportation options. We had no problems with street noise or room noise.

My wife and I stayed at the Orchard for four days on vacation. It's clean, quiet and modern. Our room faced Bush St., which is very busy; however, we were on the top (10th) floor and traffic noise was minimal.

The location can't be beat. It's near Union Square and Chinatown, at the intersection of Bush and Powell Streets. It's six blocks uphill from the Powell St. cable car turnaround and two blocks from the Chinatown Gate on Bush and Grant.

My only negative comments about the hotel are that there was no microwave oven in our room, and that the mini-bar (fridge) was packed with way-overpriced drinks and snacks. There are no guest vending machines in the hotel, but there is a 24-hour Walgreens one block away on Powell and Sutter. Resist the urge to pop open a $2.50 can of Diet Pepsi and walk two minutes to Walgreens where you can buy one for less than a dollar. And it's California, so you can buy beer, wine and hard booze there too if that's your thing.

There is a restaurant in the hotel. It's called the Daffodil, and we ate breakfast there one morning. One word: Overpriced. $34 for mediocre fare that we could have gotten for less than half that price at Denny's, and it would have been far better. I mean, $3 for a (small) cup of tea? Gimme a break.

For dinner, cross the street and go to Uncle Vito's Pizzeria. I'm Italian, so trust me on this - that was some wicked good pizza. We had enough left over for breakfast the next morning and it cost only $25.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing Bush St on the top floor. It's fun to people-watch from a high perch and...

We (my husband and I) just spend last night at The Orchard Hotel and were very pleasantly surprised by how darned nice it was. Normally we stay at the Golden Gate or White Swan, but they were all booked up with the surgeon's convention in town. The folks at the Golden Gate suggested we try The Orchard, and I'm glad they did. We also read the reviews here on T.A. to triangulate. It is more expensive than the others ($279/night), but the rooms are larger and updated with all the amenities you would expect... this was a romantic theater get away, so it was worth the extra bucks.

First, it's very easy to pull up in front of the hotel as they have a loading zone with their valet standing by. Even if you are not using their valet parking, you can stop and unload your car. BTW, there are a couple of parking lots on Bush within close proximity if you don't want to spend $40/24 hours for their valet parking. We did use their parking however, and it was quite convenient. I have to say that Cornell, the valet this morning, already had our car waiting for us before we even called... pretty cool.

We found that everyone who worked for the hotel (the ones we encountered) were all very nice and could not do enough to help. Okay, so you expect employees at a good hotel to show good manners, but there was nothing forced -- Ariel and the rest all seem to like their jobs, their customers and the hotel, and they show it.

As I mentioned, our room was larger than we expected, and well decorated, clean and inviting. The bathroom was also quite large, well lit and fitted up with excellent towels and products. Their robes were a treat and the bed was very comfortable. There was equipment for making coffee and a mini bar (which we did not use, so I cannot comment on the rate.) Based on feedback on T.A., we requested and received, a room on a high floor at the back. The view down was not so great, but across was quite good. No noise problems at all.

As others mention, The Orchard is very well located, within walking distance of most everything you want to do in the City: shopping, dining, theater, people watching... it's even close to the cable cars.

So thank you The Orchard, for making this a wonderful weekend!

Room Tip: Upper floor, away from the street is what we asked for. Front of the hotel might be fine as the hot...

The hotel was really charming and welcoming. Enjoyed our stay very much. The location is just a couple of blocks from Union Square and is on two different cable car lines so it's very convenient. Considering the location it was actually pretty quiet at night. We were on the Bush Street side, away from the cable car lines and on the ninth floor so that helped. There is a little cafe next door to the hotel that is very good for breakfast and reasonable. Also, down the street is the Cable Car Cafe...also very good for breakfast. Quite a few restaurants within a few blocks that are worth a try. The dining room at the hotel was always empty. Seemed quite overpriced. Parking is of course expensive...as usual in San Francisco. But there was a public parking lot about a half block away. Don't know their rates. We would definitely stay here again.

My girlfriend and I spent 3 nights in Frisco and 3 night in Orchard Hotel.
It's location is perfect 'cause is close to Union Square and close to cable car stop useful to go in the Pier area.At the lobby people are very kind and the rooms are big and clean.Despite the location (in the center of the city) you can't hear some noise.
Really good choise.

Finding an affordable hotel in a nice area of SF seemed almost impossible - which is why the Orchard Hotel is clearly so popular. It is so central, on the hill and couple of blocks from Union Square and near Chinatown gate, and our room on the 3rd floor was spacious and clean, if slightly dated (though we were expecting less). There are plenty of shops, restaurants and transport links nearby - it's worth staying for the location alone, but the hotel itself isn't bad either.
The front desk and valet were helpful, but the only downside was the cost of parking - $40 plus tax a day. We told ourselves we would go elsewhere, but as a foreigner driving in SF you just want to get rid of your car as soon as possible, especially driving up Powell street with the enormous hill and cable cars.

Room Tip: Try to get a room that looks out onto buildings behind rather than the street if you favour quiet ov...

We stayed at the Orchard Hotel, Bush Street, San Francisco for 9 nights in October. We had never visited SF before (we live in New Zealand) so we did our homework before booking. What a good choice we made. We enjoyed our stay at the Orchard. Check-in was a breeze, even though we arrived about 10am (check-out was easy too). The room we got was on the 6th floor and was surprisingly large, tastefully furnished with a big modern bathroom. It was clean and the bed was very comfortable, and it had an in-room safety box which was easy to use. A big plus was the free wireless internet. We found this to be immensely useful because we could use our laptop to look up places to visit and find places to eat. And there are plenty near this hotel.

Which is one of the Orchard's major good points – its location. It is a 5 minute walk to Union Square with all its shopping and bustle. It also has a cable car stop right outside the door on Powell Street. However, if you are moderately energetic (and don’t mind hills) you can walk to the waterfront for Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39 and so on. Great views on the way too. Our room overlooked the front of the hotel on busy Bush Street with the cable cars rumbling up and down Powell Street nearby. We initially thought it might be noisy. But we were amazed – it did not bother us. And we both hate noise. After a day or two we didn’t hear it, even at night. The area around the hotel felt safe. Not once did we feel threatened or even uncomfortable. Can't say the same for some other parts of SF.

And lastly, we want to thank the staff. They were great. Attentive but not overpowering. They were there when we needed them and answered all our questions. The front desk staff were nice and friendly, the concierge was very helpful (get him to organise the car to go to the airport – it was great) and the maid service was very quick and thorough.

Did we have any grumbles? Yes, but they were minor. The windows were dirty (big city grime?) and there was no way to boil water other than for coffee (we drink tea and water boiled in a coffee maker tastes like coffee no matter how much you rinse it). And their TV was a bit ancient - a flat screen would be nice (although there is so much to do in SF that watching TV is not top of mind). We thought their breakfast was average – they could do better – so we only tried it once. There are lots of other places to eat nearby.

This is a very good good hotel in a great location. It is safe, quiet and leisurely. It was a big part of a vacation we really enjoyed. Thanks Orchard - we will stay again.

And thanks San Francisco. Your city is great.
