“Clean, great location, but unfriendly staff”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 28, 2013

Good value for your money :
- Great location : the North beach area is nice and safe. (You should NOT pick a hotel located in the area of Tenderloin/ Civic Center/ South of Union Square. Those areas are not safe, really , just don't)
- Very Clean Room : I was in one of the single bed room without shower and toilet and it was clean. Shower and toilets are shared in the corridor, and it's quite clean as well.
- Unfriendly staff : this excludes the cleaning ladies who are doing a very good job. Just don't expect the receptionnists to say 'hello' to you, they won't. Every time I passed by during my week stay, I say' hello' to them, they never, never answered back.

If you are looking for a place to stay close to The Emracadero and Fisherman's Wharf, and you dont really bother about super standard, this is a perfect place for a couple of nights. Decent price, helpfull service and 10 min walk to the Pier 39.

Room Tip: Stay with inside room, rather than have a street view window.

Not far from both Union square and Embarcadero. The hotel is a cheap place to stay in San Francisco. Rooms are tiny and sometimes windows abut your opposite neighbors' rooms. If you want your room to be cleaned, you should ask for that in advance.

This hotel is pretty outdated, even for the price. They still use those old school credit card devices. Check in/check out took forever, luckily we were not in a hurry. Some staff were friendly some were not.

This hotel??? More appropriately a backpackers was overpriced at $109.00 per night. The tiny room had a tiny double bed, but linen, towels & room were thankfully clean. The place has a large number of rooms so the shared bathrooms is often very wet. There's a basin in the room so that's a help for face and hand washing.

The location is in Kearny Street off the corner of Pacific & Columbus streets. This can be confusing as there's another short Kearney Street off Bay Street. The location is very central and we walked to downtown and the waterfront-Ambercadero.

The Coit Tower is 15 min walk up the road from the hotel. Spectacular views of the city, the waterfront and Alcatraz. It's $7.00 to go up the tower. We also walked to Lombard street which is further away but can be walked or get the trolley.

Chinatown is a buzz of activity all the time, a great liveliness about the place.

Room Tip: Closer to the bathrooms.

This was our first time staying in San Francisco and we were amazed by the high prices for accommodation in the city, so Hotel North Beach seemed like a reasonable option and in the end, you generally get exactly what you would expect.

The good side is that the location is great as you are walking distance from great bars, restaurants, parks, and all sorts of activities, plus it tends to be very safe and we did not have any problems with masses of vagrants as they are known to cause alot of troubles in quite a few other neighborhoods of the city. On top of this, the staff are friendly enough and the owner has clearly done her best to keep the place clean, decently decorated, and has even included some nice complimentary bath products in each room.

The down sides however were also quite obvious, for around $120/ night you can expect a shoe box sized room with no view other than a courtyard to help ventilate other rooms. Regrettably, this also can lend to quite a lot of noise pollution as we were faced with the choice of leaving the windows closed at night and sweltering inside or being able to breathe and get woken up by the sounds of 4 german backpackers at 7h every morning. To add to this, the walls are rather thin so dont expect too much privacy. WORSE though, is that despite having around 12 rooms per floor, there is only one bathroom!

We have stayed in quite a few hostels but have never had to queue for the bath so this was a major downside as was the noise pollution, but in the end, considering its San Francisco, we felt we received good value for the money as the location is simply excellent

Great value budget hotel, in great location for exploring SF
Rooms are pre WWII style, small, compact but tidy and clean, and so are the shared facilities.
But step out the door and you are North of the Union Square problems, on the border of Chinatown and vibrant North Beach precinct, cafes, bars , niteclubs, parks and churches etc.

Room Tip: Rooms on East side face courtyard and quietest
