To travel the West Coast is to explore the vast climates and rugged terrains.
With all tours, what makes the experience memorable is the people that you travel with and even more importantly, an informative tour guide.

This review pertains to that of our guide from Yosemite through Las Vegas - Angela. First impression is key in creating a relationship with your group. Starting off by telling them the amount they paid for the tour equates to the quality of the tour is not a great way to do so. It is also highly unprofessional to discuss how your company does not pay you overtime. These are internal issues that should not be discussed in public.

Seating arrangements. Do not inform your passengers that seatings are a first come, first serve basis everyday if you do not intend to enforce it. People actually get up extra early so they can get a good seat while on tour. Nobody wants to sit in the last row, but if they arrive late - that is the consequences. Making 'mandatory' seating arrangements to put those early in the very back of the bus because those who were always late complained is absolutely unacceptable. You made the rules. Live by it. A great leader assess the situation and make decisions that is fair to everyone.

Be approachable. There wasn't a time when Miss. Angela has been approached with a question where people were not met with a look like she did not want to be bothered. This is the nature of your job.

The overall West Coast Tour has been an exhausting one, however the places we went to and the memories made has been good. It would have been great if we had a better tour guide. A  bad staff reflects poorly on the company and this is a prime example of it.

Took the three day Crater Lake Tour. The tour was ok but poorly managed. The tour guide's was bilinguial but his english was poor. They manage to completely ruin my experience on the last day by changing their route to make the first stop to drop us off into the last stop without any notice. The most puzzling aspect of this change was that the first stop was right when you come back from North. But we had to go 80 miles south to San Jose and then come back all the way to El Cerrito to be dropped off. So we were on the bus for 6 hours without any bathroom or meal breaks waiting to be dropped off. The most dissappointing thing was that the tour guides did this for their own convenience (they were going home in San Jose). Good for them to go home early but let their customers suffer...

We had taken Lassen tours for San Francisco day tour.Actually we had done our booking thro' Take tours , not sure why they put us in Lassen tours. Below are the reasons why u shud NEVER take Lassen tours.
They have a Chinese guide ( we had one Mr Fernando Ying) on the bus who can barely speak any English at all. He announces in Chinese and then in terrible English, we never understood what he said. He read out from some sheets of paper. Wish he had given us a copy of them instead !
Also the other really sad part was he was demanding $6 per person as tip and he came to each seat and collected the tip. We said we would give what we thought was appropriate but he insisted and demanded $6 per person( cost of the day trip was $58 per person). For a bus if 50 people he made a clean earning of $300 per day.I thought this was unusual in USA as we have taken other tours there and they all said gratuities was our wish and we paid a total of $5 for a group of 4. Here we ended up giving $20 on demand for the lousy announcement he made.He refused to budge and made all of us pay this tip.
I hope the Lassen tours take note of this and take a suitable action.
All other tourists pls REFRAIN from taking Lassen ,there are lot of excellent tour operators available.

After seeing some of the reviews of Lassen Tours, I felt compelled to write a more balanced review for Lassen Tours. As with all "cheap Chinese" options, you'll need to fully understand what you are getting into. Lots of my family and friends have gone on trips with Lassen, and have been generally happy.

You need to realize that this company and the tours are designed for Chinese tourists from China who want to see most of the US in 2-3 weeks, meaning 10 days on the west coast and another week or so on the east. The tours are run Asian style. You leave early in the morning, get on the bus, take a nap, get off the bus, take pictures, get back onto the bus, sleep some more, and the cycle repeats. Then day ends around 8PM and starts around 6AM, sometimes earlier.

Most of the shorter or longer options are not as good because they are affected by how the tours are run. Shorter tours don't give you enough time to enjoy the sights, the longer ones will become a drag because you'll be on the road for too long. Basically, 7-8 Yellowstone tours and 6-7 East Coast tours are the best options. You can leave the group early, so you can go somewhere else if you plan it. For example, you can get in San Francisco couple of days early, and see the city by yourself. Then, go on the Yellowstone 7 day tour and leave the group in Las Vegas. (If you want to see Disney, Universal or Sea World, you HAVE TO go by yourself. Tour groups will be terrible because you are restricted by time.) Then fly to New York (either from Vegas or LA/San Diego), sightsee a day or two before catching their east coast 6 day tour. Leave the group in Boston and fly to wherever. This is a compact 3-week US tour for people just want a whirlwind trip.

I'm a Chinese American who have lived in SF for most of my life and speak Chinese well. My family as well, so the language is not a problem. If you don't speak Chinese, talk to the tour operator and figure out which tour guides spoke English well. Yes, sometimes they speak 10mins of Chinese and 2 mins of English; of those 10mins in Chinese, most of it have nothing to do with the scenery, they telling some random stories to keep the spirits up. The bus tours are long and boring, they need to generate a little atmosphere.

Another note: if you are a foreigner with a foreign driver's license, you can rent and drive in the US. Just buy enough insurance to cover everything. Don't be afraid to get lost, that's what GPS is for. And the GPS speaks multiple languages!
