“If you only drive through, you are missing something”

It's a classic cut to North Beach, but this avenue is best traversed on foot. Really the main line of North Beach, it's collection of restaurants, bars and cafes make this a great spot in the city when you have time to kill. From Vesuvio's and CIty Lights off of Jack Kerouac to Rose Pistola and Calzone's sidewalk tables, this is one of the city's best people watching venues.

“Discover A New World!”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

If you wanted to learn about SF, in one day and on foot, Columbus Avenue would be either number one for my choice of where to start, or a super close second to California Street (which is probably too long, along with Geary Street, to cover in just one day)! If not for the fact that Columbus takes you on a genrally NW to SE or vice-versa path that cuts diagonally through most of the major landmark intersections or ones from where you can view them, then it's worth it just for the fact that it brings you along some of the best retail options for delicious food, drink, and truffles - the chocolate variety, not the fungii! From the Transamerica Pyramid in the heart of the Financial District (at its SE end) to the periphery of the Fisherman's Wharf area and a block from Ghirardelli Square (at its NW end), Columbus Avenue offers a person, especially one on foot (like I was), ample opportunities for adventures in discovery! From Washington Square with the "Saints Peter and Paul Church" right at Filbert Street to XOX Truffles at 754 Columbus Ave (a MUST VISIT truffle shop, by Greenwich) to La Trappe Cafe (an amazing Belgian style bistro serving over 500 beers - yes, five hundred! - and excellently delicious food) to Lil' Italy's offerings to some of the best sushi... I could go on and on, OR - you could go on and get out there! What are you waiting for?!!
