“Great escape”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2011

We visited Angel Island in late Feb 2011, and had a great time. It was a special holiday, so the ferry was running. The weather was a bit cold in late Feb, but luckily the sun came out, which helped a lot. There were not that many people on the ferry (and the island), but was very peaceful. I figured that it should be a mountain biker's heaven as it's great to bike on the island. The view is great, but there were not much going on here. We might come back with our own bikes next time.

“Bundle up and get ready for a bumpy ride!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2010

When all of the Alcatraz tours were booked up except for the combo tour with Angel Island we decided to bite the bullet and do it. There are beautiful views of the bay and the city from AI and the island has an interesting past (especially if you are a military buff). The thing to be aware of is that the tram ride is very, very bumpy and the seats are very narrow. Also, no matter what the weather is supposed to be like, take a jacket. If you are cold-natured, add gloves, scarf and hat. It was in the low 50s with strong winds on the day we toured: July 25. JULY!!!
I think AI would be a better trip to do on its own instead of as a combo ticket. Ferries take you there we saw lots of hikers, cyclists and picnickers. There are plenty of trails to explore and a few secluded beaches to relax on, though I imagine swimming would be out of the question --- Brr!

“Angel Island by Bike”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2008

There are 2 ways to get to Angel Island: the ferry from San Francisco or the ferry from Tiburon. The Tiburon ferry is by far the shorter ride and the ferries go more often. (The town of Tiburon in Marin County is cute with many terrific restaurants and shops).

If you can, bring your bicycle and water. The loop road around the island is about 5 miles. The only steep part is when you first leave the dock area. There is an old civil war fort with parade grounds, the staging area where the US military took "our boys" before shipping them out to Pacific Island hop during WWII, an old Nike missile site. and spectacular views all around. The Natl. Park Service is working on a major new "attraction" which is basically the west coast version of Ellis Island. Most immigrants coming from the Pacific Rim came through Angel Island and soon you'll be able to learn more about it. Try to allow at least 4 hours for the whole loop. You can do it faster but it is well worth your time.

There is a cafe on the island, near the ferry dock along with bike rentals (expensive) and the staging area for the tram tour. There are also picnic tables and a small beach.

“A great place to get away from city life”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2008

Angel Island is located in the bay and is only about 30 minutes away by ferry. The time is limited on the Island to about 5-6 hours when the last one leaves. This gives plenty of tiem to explore by foot, bike or Segway guided tour which looked fun.

Once arriving there is generally two trails one which goes up to the peak and down again and one which circumvates the Island visting all the old military buildings.

As I do a fair bit of hiking I just managed to fit both in but would suggest most people only do one. The hike to the peak and down again gives excellant views of Sausalito and Tiburon as well as back to the city and the Golden Gate bridge weather permitting.

If you go around the edge of the Island there is a multitude of buildings to explore as it probably the best bet for most people especially if you have children. I had to rush this slightly to make sure I made the last ferry back but will certainly come back again to explore more.

If you want a day out of the city the island is a great getaway for something different.

“Visit the island...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 24, 2007

check out the following web site for more info:

http://www.angelisland.org/

Everyone knows Alcatraz, Angel Island State Park is still a great secret...great place for hiking (5 miles around), biking (bring your own or rent), boating (bring your own and dock for the day) and maybe overnight backpack camping (only 9 campsites or so..reserve early)..

can be very busy on summer weekends or holidays...

check ferry schedules as they are abriviated in the off season..

Don't miss the boat!
