Gracias Madre, owned by the Café Gratitude family, is an organic vegan taqueria, incorporating local, seasonal, and heirloom veggies as well as other interesting treats.

The walls are covered with the works of local muralists and the food, mostly sourced from their nearby organic Vacaville farm, is quite good and is a very welcome addition to the huge field of Mexican restaurants.

The food was tasty and featured lovely fresh flavours. I particularly enjoyed the three-taco plate. The greens filling was unusual and offered a nice new experience; I enjoyed the grilled flavour of the calabaza filling, but I was by far most impressed by the ejotes (green beans), which were nicely seasoned with a little bit of hot peppers and blended beautifully with the richness of the cashew cream which was drizzled across all of the tacos. Frying the corn tortillas was a nice touch, as it added flexibility and strength to an otherwise fragile taco wrapper.

The corn tamal and the pozole were less perfect. As is often the case with tamales, especially vegetarian ones, the enormous tamal sported a ratio of too much masa to filling; in all other ways, however, including the fresh tomato relish served with it (in the a la carte version), this was a tasty choice. The pozole was unexpected in that it was more like a fresh vegetable soup, the hominy being far undercooked with respect to the traditional dish. The dish's flavour was good, but it lacked the full heat and maturity expected. The presentation did its best to make up for these deficiencies.

Having seen complaints about the service, we chose to visit here after the lunch rush on a weekday. Our service left nothing to be desired. It was very non-invasive, with the server coming by only to take our order, deliver food, clear plates, and handle the bill; at all times she was pleasant and responsive. I very much appreciated the lack of attention otherwise, as we felt free to take our time and enjoy our meal and the surroundings. I understand that this may not be to every person's liking, but knowing what to expect goes a long way.

Food is excellent. Lovely presentation using real whole foods. Corn on the cob with a cashew cheese dressing appetizer was yummy but a bit over-priced. Place is very busy so make a reservation or go early. Highly recommend!

This place is awesome. I got the tacos with kale and zuccini (you can choose between five fillings) which were so good. The vegs weren't overcooked and we got a real spicy side sauce to spice it up. Service was very busy but friendly. I'll definitley go there again.

Wow, was this a great place to eat! We decided to share a whole bunch of apps...the gorditas were fantastic and the coconut ceviche was really tasty too. So many other interesting dishes were had. And the Mexican chocolate cake with homemade coconut ice cream was a nice end to the meal. Definitely going back here!
