My wife and I recently ate at Bang San Thai because of a review we read in Frommer's. (We were staying in Union Square). The restaurant is located in The Tenderloin, which is a shady area adjacent to upscale Union Square. We passed many homeless people, drug addicts, pan handlers, and other sketchy individuals on the walk over. Having said that, the food was remakably good. Price was right too - $30 included appetizer, dinner, and tip. I had the green curry with shrimp and it very, very good. My wife had the pumpkin curry, and she enjoyed her meal as well. We were the only people there. They do not sell alcohol, but the waiter told me to go to a nearby concenience store and purchase beer, which he said was fine. The place smells funky, but so does everything in San Fran. Glad we went but won't rush back because of the neighborhood.
