This plac is channlgin the Copenhagen classic Noma--there are locally foraged microgreens and essences of this and apples done twenty five ways...and you know what? It works. If this place didnt' have heart and soul it wold be pretentious. My boyff and I booked it to celebrate our engagement,. We ere greeted with a glass of fizz on arrival and then left to be revoltingly soppy. we did the tasting menu w wine matching. It changes all the time but every course was inventinve and each complemented the last. It told a story. A special place for a special night.

Exceptional, creative cuisine at an affordable price point. Fine dining and select bar / wine list. The ambience is inviting, but it's the good that stars. Oh, and there's a small parking lot - a bonus in San Francisco!

I liked this restaurant so much that I went back two days in a row on a 3 night stay in SF, I certainly would have gone a third time if I had'nt have to leave !

The first night I had three a la carte plates, one was spectacular (the sea urchin with wasabi), another wonderful (the calamari), and the third one a little underwhelming (the corned beef tongue). But all dishes were so original I had to come back try the wine-paired tasting menu...

The food here is not "overcomplicated", although the dishes match a great number of ingredients: the compositions are like pointillistic taste-poems (as in tone-poem), that blend and juxtapose colors, hues, textures, fragrances and aromas. The chef really has a knack for completely improbable but delicious juxtapositions: who would have thought to combine octopus with an almond mousse? Well, the alliance is more than astonishing, it's perfect, as strangely enough the tastes of almonds and octopus has so much in common ! Or what about the incredible wine pairings of the tasting menu: you might find a dish solely made of beets in various variations with pumpernickel and watercress bizarre, and even more so the pairing with a spanish Tempranillo. But the red wine and the beets pair and echo each other in an astonishingly harmonious way, quiet a revelation !

This restaurant thus really is a must-visit in San Francisco: highly original, unique, perfectly conceived and executed, delicious food ! As a matter of fact, after a year of travelling, it's on my list of my 3 worldwide favorite restaurants, with "Cuisine Wat Damnak" in Siem Reap, Cambodia (traditional cambodian cuisine and ingredients on 3 star Michelin level by a young french chef from Roanne), and "Old Pinke House" in Savannah Georgia with glorious low-country cuisine.

We visited Commonwealth after a recommendation from our hotel. They were full at the tables so we sat at the bar. The restaurant is very funky inside but in a very run down area of San Francisco. We chose to have the $125 per head tasting menu with wine included. Again all seemed well and we were able to slightly amend the menu due to allergies. However we just felt that each course was just too over complicated with very small portions and we were rushed through and almost seemed to be an inconvenience when asking about the wines for each course etc. All in all it was an expensive evening that didn't live up to expectations.

Everything we ate here was great. Very creative and very good value for the quality. If we had known how good it was going to be we would have gone for the tasting menu. Note - the restaurant doesnt look like much and the area is quite dodgy.
