If you were like me, you'd sack up and get the tasting menu and challenge your flyover country taste buds, because a real man allows his mouth to be manhandled by the pros.

“Exquisite Edible Art”
Reviewed August 25, 2012

This resto is recently featured in San Francisco's foodie mags. The chef is noted as a rising star in the Sf food scene. The atmosphere is low lit, simple chic. Servers are attentive and knowledgable. A group of 6 had the chef's tasting menu. Special dietary considerations were easily accomodated. Each plate was a combination of science and art combined to surprise your eyes & your palate. It's truly an amazing dining experience!

“Creative American food, community responsibility, and liquid nitrogen”
Reviewed August 4, 2012 via mobile

This is a tiny gem of a restaurant located in a neighborhood you wouldn't expect. There is a tiny parking lot, or take a cab - it is worth the effort to go out of the usual restaurant areas.

Commonwealth strikes the improbable balance between fresh ingredients, creativity of flavor (without getting ridiculous), attentive warm service, modern food trends, and community responsibility. Before you even start your meal you get some house-made potato chips sprinkled with seaweed and served with a malt vinegar mousse in which to dip the chips - addictive. We got the six course tasting menu which I would recommend highly - truthfully we've had tasting menus at other restaurants for double the Commonwealth price and haven't been as pleased as we were here. When we dined in late July 2012 the price was $65 without wine, and $10 of that price gets donated to a different local charity each month.

While it was all delicious, we swooned at the day boat scallop served with a popcorn purée and a yuzu emulsion. The duck breast with the stone fruit was a close second, although I also loved the radishes with ancient grains and fromage blanc, not to mention the chocolate peanut butter semifreddo with frozen popcorn.

Because we had to wait a bit even though we had a reservation, the staff threw in an extra course to our dinner, which was a lovely surprise and made us feel well taken care of. It was the best meal we had on our trip to the Bay area and we look forward to returning here the next time we're in SF.

“Sorry to be a stick in the mud!”
Reviewed August 3, 2012

Given the rave reviews we had been looking forward to eating here, but ended up being very disappointed. We consider ourselves "foodies" and like creative preparations, but our conclusion was that Commonwealth is more interested in using unusual ingredients to celebrate inventiveness than to really be focused on the degree to which they contribute to a tasty dish. We simply did not find the small plates we ordered to be very tasty. Also, it was unbelievably loud in the restaurant (although that is not unusual in San Francisco).
