This place is a little hidden gem. After months of searching for a restaurant for our small wedding party, (we married in San Francisco even though we're from England). We found Baker & Banker. We dealt with Callie Baldow who is the manager and was so help over the phone as we book the restaurant pretty much blind. Both my wife to be and I arrived in San Francisco and booked a meal there prior to our wedding day so that we could at least sample the food. Wow what a find, the entire staff were helpful, service was prompt at exactly the right time and the food was spectacular. A small intimate restaurant that soon buzzes to life with local people.....not a tourist in sight, which to me think that San Franciscians are trying to keep this place for themselves!!! Anyway a few days late and very confident that our small party would enjoy the restaurant we all arrived....Baker & Banker did not disappoint, food and service was beyond any Michelin star restaurant I've been too and every one of our party of 12 couldn't stop talking about the place and how good it was. In summary this restaurant is one of the finest I have been too, I couldn't thank the staff enough, especially Callie Baldow for providing a service second to none. Please go and enjoy this restaurant I promise you won't be disappointed.

I only visited the bakery, not the restaurant. I have heard a lot about the brown butter chocolate chip cookies. They were ok. I don't like crisp chocolate chip cookies but I also don't like the kind that are so soft they seem undercooked and fall apart. These cookies were good on the outside rim but the farther you get into the cookie, it just falls apart and for me seems undercooked. Incredibly rich and left me feeling really heavy.

I love the location of this place, I love the ambiance, and I want to love the entire experience, but the food was only average, and the service, while friendly, was pretty poor. We had a group of six for a special occasion dinner, with several wine courses and three plates.

On the negative side:
- The waiter got about half of each of the courses wrong -- wrong order, wrong person, etc. and didn't apologize or seem concerned it was all off.
- The wine selection is good but expensive (typical California -- great wine if you want to spend $55+, less good for the $25 range).
- The fish and meats were decently served and presented, but it was nothing special, especially at this price point. Like many restaurants, you have to order the sides, which i woudl recommend as the main courses are on the small side.
- We constantly had empty wine and sparkling wine glasses. When I suggested we just keep the bottle on the table, it was refused and placed with some pomp back in the ice bucket (pretty rude, in retrospect).
- The epsresso - and i love espresso, although I'm not a coffee snob -- was very bad, incredibly bitter and harsh, as if the machine wasn't cleaned, or they were using too light a roast for an espresso machine. It was also poured very long (filling an entire large shot cup) whereas it should be pulled if not ristretto at least not a full cup.
- We were also rushed out for the next customers -- this is not abnormal for the USA, but for someone living in Europe, its pretty shocking to experience, but we can't blame this particular restaurant for what is acceptable in the States.

+ On the plus side, the deserts were fantastic.

Overall, for the prices, this place just doesn't live up to the hype. Splurge elsewhere.

First, let's be clear about the employee mandate 4 % ripoff. The only SF requirement is to provide health care to employees.. Not to "mandate" a 4% surcharge (on already inflated prices).

Yes the $5 bread was good, as it should be in an overpriced restaurant (most of which do not have the gall to charge for it.

Tables are intolerably close.

Most food was well prepared but waiters(?) did not know who ordered what.

Babette was ordered medium but arrived rare evn though it was sliced and easy to see it was undercooked. It was re-fired and arrived overcooked (it was comped but we came to eat, not get refunds).

There was virtually nothing served on the plates for the entrees and the side of potatoes ($7) was inedible.

The fish and hen entrees were very good but tiny.

Xxx chocolate cake was delicious.

I read the reviews and wonder why people pay so much and accept such medioctity as being excellent. It reminds me of The Emperors New Clothes. You're should expect better.

My favorite local, intimate restaurant, I often choose to meet friends or take guests here. The seasonal food is always delicious, the service excellent, and the atmosphere is comfortable and relaxed. At this visit I had an exceptional Duck Terrine appetizer, while others really enjoyed the House Smoked Trout. Our main courses (Quail, Black Cod) and desserts (XXX cake, Cherry Almond galettes) were equally wonderful, both in taste and presentation. An evening here is a wonderful treat - one that should be repeated often!
