“Something fascinating and FREE to do in SF”

A must-do for anyone visiting San Francisco who enjoys learning about history. Wonderful walking tours that really are free of charge -- you can show your appreciation by giving a tip at the end of the tour. Incredibly knowledgeable guides who are also SF residents offer interesting perspectives on the different areas of the city. Many different tours to choose from (check out their website), so it's easy to find something you would like. My two children even lasted an hour and a half on the Victorian architecture tour! Highly recommend.

“excellent experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 7, 2012

These tours have real advantages over some of the others. For one thing you can decide at the last moment to go or not. No reservations are taken. They really are free, although most people give some money at the end to support the organization. If you do not do so, no one says anything. And finally the guides know their stuff. I have lived in the San Francisco area for more than 30 years and I have learned something every time I have taken a tour. The four tours I have taken were excellent.

“Why isn't this higher in the Tripadvisor ratings?”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 1, 2012

We went on 3 tours - Palace Hotel, North Beach by Night and the Golden Gate bridge tour. The guides were all good (informative, clear), and all donations go to the library (they are not tips for the guide). Wish we had time for more tours.

The group sizes were decent - not overly large like one might have expected from a free tour.

“Very good tour”

Robin was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. She obviously loves the Golden Gate Bridge and sharing that love with others. The tours are free and you are encouraged to give a donation.

“Free walking tours in San Francisco”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2012

Took the Fisherman's Wharf, A Hidden History tour on Monday 20 August. It started promptly. Our guide Randy B was very knowledgeable and interesting. Although it was a walking tour we did not walk very far and so I would recommend the tour to anyone who is interested in the history of the wharf, no matter how mobile you are. Suitable for wheelchair access as we only came down one set of steps at the very beginning of the tour as we left the meeting point. Although we did not specifically stop for refreshments or to use bathroom facilities, it would have been easy to access either. You could ask as many questions as you liked and they were all answered. Would recommend this tour and am now going to try another. Although the tour is free, you are invited to give a donation at the end. We did not feel at all under pressure to do so but when you consider that someone has just spent 2 hours non-stop talking to you, who wouldn't want to tip! We were told that the money does not go to the guide but back into helping organise the San Francisco City guides.

One other thing included on the tour was a visit to a crab company run by women, again very interesting. We listened to a 5-10 minute talk.
