The food is amazing and the waiters very nice and warm. Quality service, fast, and yummy... it's a bit expensive but it's well worth it.

“One of my favorites”
Reviewed November 13, 2006

Across from the gates of Chinatown, and next to the Hotel Triton, is one of my favorite cafes in San Francisco. I either go for breakfast, and order a latte bowl and brioche, or for lunch I order the croque monsieur sandwich. It has an authentic French bistro feel, and if the weather is nice, I sit outside and enjoy people watching. The service can be iffy, but the atmosphere and food make up for it.

“It's new and it's changed”
Reviewed September 9, 2006

Up until a few months ago, Cafe de la Presse was our favorite little French bistro to have perfect boeuf Bourguignon and tarte tartin. We loved this cute place with worn hardwood floors and a bar in the middle of the room.

Then they closed for renovation. This restaurant is attached to the Triton Hotel which is a great hotel. So, we waited impatiently for them to reopen the restaurant.

A month ago we were in San Francisco and Cafe de la Presse had reopened. We were so excited we took friends. Unfortunately nothing is the same. It is no longer the quaint tiny bistro feel, but instead a large impersonal and commercial room. The beautiful old bar was removed to another room to make more room to jam in as many people as possibe in the dining area now.

But the worst offense of all is the menu. It is - as close as we can figure - mediterranean now. Actually, the menu was so eclectic and non-sensical that none of the four of us could find things we wanted to eat. But it was late and we had made the effort to get there, so we stayed. The goofy young waitress knew nothing about the food and was very giggly when we asked the "style" of food they now served. She didn't know.

The food is now mediocre. And strange. They no longer serve French bistro food and the incredible beef burgandy and apple tarte that we lived for, outside of going to Paris, is gone from the menu. Everything is gone from the menu. Instead that offered these flatbread type appetizers with goat cheese and other California nouveau ingrediants. Not very bistroish and certainly not needed in a city full of great restaurants.

The menu is much much more expensive now, I guess to pay for all those commercial looking decorations.

We will not return. However, just down the street is another wonderful French Bistro Claudes. So, I guess we'll have to change our favorite place.
