Casa Loma Hotel

Unlike the name suggest, this is not a hotel, more like a serviced apartment. There is no daily room service, no 24hrs reception, most rooms have shared bathroom and no elevator. It's a good 30 mins walk from central area.

I've spent 2 nights at the casa Loma in a room with shared bathroom. The room was basic but had the amenities you need (fridge, tv, basin and a very comfy bed) and in such a wonderful city, you don't need much more than this. The shared bathrooms were very clean and so was the room. I haven't had to queue for the shower.
2 comments linked to previous reviews. The manager was very nice and helpful and he did help me with bringing my suitcase to my room.
The only downside is the noise. I was in a room facing the street and despite the double glazed windows, the traffic noise can still be loud at night. I was very jet lagged so had no issues sleeping but I can easily imagine it could be an issue for light sleepers. In this case, I'd suggest you bring earplugs with you just in case.
Location is not the most central for some of the touristy places such as the piers and it can be a bit of a trip to get to that part of the city. On the other hand, if you go down Fillmore street, there is plenty of cool restaurants and shopping around and it is a cute area. There are also direct buses to get to Powell and to the marina as well as to golden gate park. It is also next door to Alamo square and the painted ladies. There is a nice little cafe called Alamo square about 1min walk from the hotel where they serve good bagels and where you can get free wifi
Overall it is excellent value for money and I would happily stay there again.

Room Tip: Maybe worth to ask if there are rooms at the back or go to the 3rd floor rather than the second floo...

The Casa Loma is perfect is you're looking for a chilled, urban break. It's 5mins from Alamo Park and it's hilltop views of the city. We had a pretty basic room with a shared bathroom/shower, which was fine. There's a sink in the room and little tv, but that's about it.

Downstairs behind reception there was a laundry area and a communal micro-wave; both proved really handy, along with the vending machine which sold Danish pastries that probably could take a full-on nuclear attack without a dent! ;)

Best bet for breakfast though is the Alamo Cafe about 2mins away; great bakery (almond croissants..) and really good prices for SFO - a real 'locals' place.

The MUNI transit system (electric buses) goes right past the end of the street and I think was only $2 for a trip into town! On that note, if you're arriving over the Bay bridge, really don't try and walk it. It took us nearly 90mins and that included a Q&A with pretty much every homeless guy on Market St..!

You can walk to the Fisherman's Wharf though, and from there get trips to the Golden Gate Bridge etc. I'd recommend the 45min walk to Golden Gate Park tho, and spend a day there.

Thanks Casa Loma!

The only thing keeping this from being an overall 5 is lack of an elevator and no coffee pots in the rooms or even downstairs. That said, the bed and pillows and comforter were comfy, and the sheets and towels were softer than those at a Westin in Long Beach where we stayed earlier on this trip. There was a small fridge adequate for the two of us, and the queen rooms have a private bathroom. There is no daily maid service, so this is not a hotel for slobs, but if you pack efficiently and are fairly tidy you will enjoy your stay. Staff were all knowledgeable and friendly. There is a bus stop right down the street and around the corner, and a neighborhood store also just down the street. No A/C is needed, and it was great to open the windows. SF has fabulous public transport, so a car is not needed. If you buy a MUNI pass for several days, not only do you save money, but it works for all buses, cable cars, streetcars, unlimited rides (everything but BART). Casa Loma is near Alamo Square, the Haight, and just a short ride to everywhere (don't miss ocean beach and walking in the sand).

We stayed here for two nights. Loved the location and the price! We stayed at The Metro for one night, and we both agreed that Casa Loma was better. Bigger room, more light froom outside, fridge in room, hair dryer in room, not so much at The Metro. Yes the metro was more modern, but it's SF who wants modern, we want Victorian! LOL! Love this place and will not stay anywhere else on future trips. The staff are all SUPER cool... but so is everyone that lives in Lower Haight! Can't wait to go back!

After scouring for places, trying to stay in neighborhood areas, we landed with this after other seemingly better options were fully booked. We had the "suite" on the ground floor, which had a privated bathroom and kitchen "across" the hall, yet inside your "unlocked" area. The main room was actually 2 rooms, one with queen bed i think, and the other with full futon couch. Also dining table, couple lounge chairs, and flat screen tv. The noise off the street is kind of loud due to traffic at any hour of the night. Bring ear plugs, and I'm hard of hearing :). The room was clean, beds were comfy. Space heaters supplied for heat if needed. Standing shower stall with curtain, hot water took a little while but it came on. Toilet and sink are separate in another spot. Only one mirror in the whole area (over sink) with no plug outlet. Manager Mike was friendly. Other attendants nice as well. Location is fine, street parking is a challenge, but there is street parking. Area was definately safe, with cool restaurants and bars a few blocks away.

"Hotel" entry area is a desk, couple chairs and some maps. No one there at night.

Being San Francisco accomodations seem to be higher than most cities, i still think this place at $139 a night was not exactly suited for that price, but i guess it's San Francisco.

To be honest, wouldn't stay here again.

I stayed here (Standard Double Room with Shared Bathroom) for 4 nights. I am satisfied with the cleanliness of the room and bathroom. It is a quiet hotel given its location away from the downtown and hence one can have a good rest after a long day. Although it is away from downtown, it's located between Fillmore street and Hayes street. So, one can easily take bus 21 to downtown. There are two groceries stores located opposite of the hotel and so getting snacks and drinks are not a problem. Within walking distance, there are lots of restaurants at Filmore Street. The hotel itself do provide self-laundry and dryer.

Room Tip: Do request for rooms at first floor because they do not have elevator service.
